Dan McCoy
[0:00] Hey everyone and welcome to the Flophouse. I'm Dan McCoy.
[0:07] Hey, I'm Stuart Wellington.
Elliott Kalan
[0:09] I'm Elliot Kalin.
[0:12] Oh wow.
[0:12] And I'm okay with that. Yeah.
Dan McCoy
[0:14] Oh good. I'm glad to hear that.
[0:15] Hey, and also we have a guest today.
[0:18] Our guest is Felipe Sobrero.
[0:22] He is a comics artist.
[0:24] He is an illustrator.
[0:27] He is in the extended Flophouse universe.
[0:32] He did a t-shirt for us where we were all teen wolves.
[0:37] He has done a lot of illustrations.
[0:38] It was for our teen wolf live show.
[0:41] There was a reason we were all teen wolves.
[0:43] I should have worn that shirt today.
Elliott Kalan
[0:44] That's the shirt I should have worn today.
Dan McCoy
[0:46] He's done a bunch of illustrations for a friend of the show, Nathan Rabin.
[0:51] And a friend of the show, We Hate Movies.
[0:53] And Greatest Generation.
[0:56] A lot of friends of the show.
[0:57] We have friends, guys.
[0:59] Anyway, Felipe.
[1:00] Well, the show has friends, Dan.
[1:01] Thank you.
[1:02] Say more about your work.
[1:03] What would you like to highlight?
[1:06] Hey guys, how are you?
[1:07] Well, yeah.
[1:08] Hello.
Elliott Kalan
[1:10] That's part of how we talk.
[1:11] Dan didn't even explain this as a mini episode.
[1:13] We're not watching a movie today.
[1:14] Well, I was going to get there.
[1:15] Instead, we're going to talk about what we want.
[1:16] But yeah, Felipe, tell us what are your career highlights that you want people to run out and buy?
S3
[1:21] I mean, number one right now is being here today with you guys.
[1:24] Oh, that's very sweet.
[1:25] Number two is I'm currently drawing the upcoming Toxic Avenger comic for Ahoy Comics written by Matt Bors, current writer.
[1:36] And I'm drawing the next miniseries, which is The Toxic Avenger versus The Noxious Offender.
[1:44] And recently, I also did an official sequel to Blues Brothers written by Dan Akron's daughter, Judy Belushi's song.
[1:57] It came out from Z2 Comics.
[1:59] It's an actual official sequel.
[2:03] It happens before Blues Brothers 2000.
[2:08] So, you know, Jake's still alive in the story.
[2:10] And those are my two, like, most recent credits.
[2:14] And what I'm doing right now is The Toxic Book.
Dan McCoy
[2:17] And I was looking at your website before we got on, and I saw that you also did coloring for a book that was conceived by Jason Derulo, who was Rum Tum Tugger and Cats.
[2:31] Yes.
[2:32] That was very exciting.
[2:33] You have a cats association.
[2:35] A cats connection.
S3
[2:36] Yes.
[2:37] It's a cats connection.
[2:39] He wrote it and I colored it.
Elliott Kalan
[2:42] I apologize.
[2:43] I have not read the Blues Brothers book yet, but I've heard it's really good.
[2:46] I've been hearing actually really great things about the Blues Brothers sequel book.
[2:49] Thank you.
[2:49] So, I'm looking forward to reading that.
[2:51] Any Blues Brothers material that does not have a certain director attached to it is all the more attractive to me.
[2:59] Now, which one?
[3:00] The one who directed Blues Brothers.
Dan McCoy
[3:02] Roman Polanski?
[3:03] I mean, that also would be a problem.
Elliott Kalan
[3:05] But you were kind enough to share with us the first two issues of the new Toxic Avenger book, and it's a really fun book.
[3:14] I enjoyed it so much, and I have a – just personally, I have a mixed history with Troma products.
[3:20] Sometimes I see them and I'm like, this is so much fun, and sometimes I see them and I'm like, this is not for me.
[3:25] This is a little bit too much.
[3:26] And I feel like the writing and the art both are like right in that sweet spot where it is gross, but it's also really fun, and it's really exciting and funny and like genuinely like touching and appealing.
[3:39] And I was saying before the recording, there's a panel in the first issue where there's like a guy who works at a convenience store, a grocery store, and he's just been killed and his guts are ripped out and he's hanging on the shelves.
[3:49] And I was like, you know what?
[3:51] This should be a horrific image, but there's something kind of fun and funny and like a little adorable about it.
[3:57] I was like, this is the best way you could draw somebody with their guts ripped out just right there on the panel.
[4:03] And I think it's really hitting that sweet spot so nicely of where you want Troma stuff to be, where it is – it's pushing the boundaries, but it's pushing the boundaries in a way that is fun, fun and meaningful, you know?
[4:15] So I think you're doing – it's just really – it looks great.
[4:18] It looks great.
[4:18] Are you doing the coloring on it as well?
S3
[4:20] No, just the line work.
[4:22] The coloring is by Lee Lowridge, who's a notorious colorist.
[4:27] Within my community of, you know, comic artists.
[4:31] He's not famous.
[4:33] He's just famous.
[4:35] And –
Elliott Kalan
[4:35] Okay.
[4:36] Yeah, yeah.
[4:36] Just uses the blood of their victims in the art.
[4:39] To color the history comics.
[4:41] It looks – it all looks really great.
[4:43] Thank you.
[4:43] And like the – I think it's the best that Toxie has looked.
[4:47] Oh, wow.
[4:48] The movies, I'm going to say.
[4:49] Thank you so much.
[4:50] Excellent work with that.
Dan McCoy
[4:51] Well, I'm glad you brought it back to the Toxic Avenger because as Elliot referred to before,
[4:56] this is a mini episode of the Flophouse podcast.
[5:00] On our so-called main episodes, we watch a bad movie and then we talk about it.
[5:06] But on these minis, we sort of do whatever we want, usually movie related, not always.
[5:11] But in this case, yeah, we're going to be talking about movies.
[5:15] And Toxie is, of course, one of cinema's great mutants.
[5:20] Uh-huh.
[5:20] And so this is going to be a mutant-themed mini.
[5:24] And I'm going to return us to those infernal goofs in a segment I like to call,
[5:32] Look Out!
[5:32] The Goofs Are Mutating!
[5:34] Oh.
[5:35] Okay.
Elliott Kalan
[5:36] Sponsor.
[5:36] What I like is so many segment titles try to be plays on popular phrases or pre-existing
[5:42] titles.
[5:43] And this one is not.
[5:44] I like that about it.
Dan McCoy
[5:45] Well, maybe you'll like this.
[5:46] It's sponsored by Oriata's Mute Taters.
[5:50] Okay.
[5:50] The only potatoes absolutely guaranteed not to talk.
[5:54] Wait a minute.
[5:54] Aren't all potatoes mute?
[5:56] Sure, in an ideal world.
[5:58] But are you willing to take that chance?
[6:00] Oriata's Mute Taters are the only tater brand brave enough to expressly guarantee your potatoes
[6:06] will not scream when you bite into them.
[6:08] Keep it safe.
Stuart Wellington
[6:09] Keep it, Oriata's.
[6:11] I like that there's a little call and response there, both from Dan.
[6:14] Like a little bit of back and forth.
Elliott Kalan
[6:15] It was almost like the two sides of Dan's personality were talking to each other.
Stuart Wellington
[6:20] Okay.
Elliott Kalan
[6:21] The two bears that are inside of Dan were having a conversation about potatoes.
Stuart Wellington
[6:24] I'm like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Oriata?
Dan McCoy
[6:26] I don't know.
[6:28] I'm working on it.
[6:30] So how this is going to work is I'm going to read you a goof from a movie, a mutant related
[6:36] movie.
Elliott Kalan
[6:37] And these are not, these are not, these are movie goofs, but they're not necessarily goofy
[6:40] movies.
Dan McCoy
[6:41] No, this is not.
[6:43] This is not from a goofy movie.
Elliott Kalan
[6:44] Because the characters in a goofy movie, they are mutants, right?
[6:48] Like they're mutant dogs in a future where humans are.
[6:50] Humans have gone extinct.
[6:50] Yeah.
[6:51] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
S3
[6:52] Into a human-like form.
[6:53] Either they are mutants or Pluto is a mutant.
[6:55] One of those, you know.
[6:57] Oh, that's true.
[6:58] Yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[6:58] Could go the other way.
[6:59] They can't both be normal.
[7:00] One of them has to be a mutant.
[7:02] Yeah.
Dan McCoy
[7:03] We're going to see if you can guess what movie I'm talking about.
[7:06] These are all mutant related films.
[7:09] For this though, I am excluding X-Men style superhero mutants.
[7:13] Thank fuck.
[7:14] Sticking with more traditional mutants.
Elliott Kalan
[7:17] Traditional mutants?
[7:18] You know, the kind that grandma used to make.
Dan McCoy
[7:22] And then once revealed.
[7:24] In her creature factory.
[7:25] Yeah.
Stuart Wellington
[7:26] She would take them out, leave them on the windowsill to grandma was Rick Baker.
[7:30] Yeah, yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[7:31] Oh, I forgot to mention my grandma was the high evolutionary.
[7:33] Yeah, yeah.
[7:33] Yeah.
Dan McCoy
[7:35] Once revealed, I'm going to ask your opinion on the movie just as a movie and as a mutant movie specifically.
[7:44] You know, so we can, you know, have a little chatter, not just like play a game and make people listen to us play a game.
[7:50] I don't know.
[7:51] People like people playing games.
[7:53] There's a whole thing called Twitch that's all about it.
[7:55] I know.
[7:56] I don't understand it.
[7:56] People do love playing games.
[7:57] Yeah.
[7:57] I don't understand.
[7:58] There's so much about the modern internet.
[8:00] I'm like, I'm such an old man these days.
[8:02] There are things that I just don't understand.
Elliott Kalan
[8:04] I'm talking to websites.
[8:06] I was.
[8:07] How come no one goes to GeoCities anymore?
S3
[8:10] I was talking to Audrey.
Elliott Kalan
[8:11] Where's the angel fire?
[8:12] Who put that on?
S3
[8:13] There are no rings anymore.
Dan McCoy
[8:15] Yeah, well, you're the whip rings.
[8:17] Well, I was talking to Audrey about this whole like school of like TikTok or real where it's just like we have clipped a bit of audio and we are lip syncing to it for a moment.
[8:29] And what we're doing is not necessarily funny or interesting, but it exists.
[8:34] And there's so many of these.
[8:36] Yeah.
[8:36] And I'm like, why does this, why does this happen?
[8:38] And Audrey like offered me all these like perfectly good explanations.
[8:41] And I'm like, yeah, but like, but why?
[8:44] Why would anyone possibly care to watch this?
Stuart Wellington
[8:47] Well, as a hot girl on the internet, I think it's because like I play upon, you know, the thirst of all my thirsty fans.
Elliott Kalan
[8:56] Dan, I think you're looking at things with a very 20th century idea of what entertainment is.
[9:01] Which is that entertainment is the thing that entertains you.
[9:04] Something enjoyable.
[9:05] Exactly.
[9:06] In the 21st century, entertainment is just a thing that happens on a screen.
[9:12] It's short enough that you don't have to think about it, but it's long enough that it distracts you from the pain that is life.
[9:18] And so it doesn't really need.
[9:20] But it's causing more pain, Elliot.
Stuart Wellington
[9:22] It's secretly causing more pain.
[9:23] No, no, no, no.
[9:23] Long-term pain.
Elliott Kalan
[9:24] Long-term pain.
Stuart Wellington
[9:24] It's something that you can enjoy when you're going from one job to another job in the gig economy.
Elliott Kalan
[9:31] That situation is right.
[9:33] The word I want to pinpoint there is enjoy.
[9:35] Enjoyment is not what entertainment is about anymore.
[9:37] Distraction is what entertainment is about.
[9:39] Distraction and making you mad.
[9:41] So, Dan, if you're mad that they're doing that and it's popular, it's doing its job.
[9:45] Oh, okay.
[9:45] Because the new enjoyment is getting mad at something.
Stuart Wellington
[9:47] The eggs on my face then, I guess.
[9:49] I'm sorry.
Elliott Kalan
[9:49] Old people.
Stuart Wellington
[9:50] That would actually make amazing content, Dan, is putting eggs on your face.
[9:55] Shoving eggs into my face.
Elliott Kalan
[9:56] Yes, yes.
[9:56] And you put a clip.
[9:57] You put like a three-second clip from a popular song, that Choosing Texas song or something like that.
[10:03] And that's the whole thing.
[10:03] Too popular.
[10:04] You got to call it back a little bit.
[10:05] Okay, sorry.
[10:06] Then like 100 Gex or whatever they're called.
Dan McCoy
[10:08] Are you worried I'm going to get too powerful with my new Texas egg reel?
Stuart Wellington
[10:12] Well, I mean, at some point, this Texas egg thing, the Texas egg craze will blow over.
[10:16] And then where will it be?
[10:17] Have more egg on your face?
Elliott Kalan
[10:19] The hashtag is Choosing Eggsis.
[10:20] That's what it is.
[10:22] Choose your own egg venture.
[10:23] In the past, maybe old people were like, I like this thing.
[10:27] That's why I watch it.
[10:28] Young people are like, this thing exists and I don't like it.
[10:31] That's why I watch it.
[10:32] So anyway, continue.
[10:33] Mutants.
Dan McCoy
[10:34] Well, now that we've proven our old person bona fides, let's go on to this goof game.
[10:42] Okay, here's the goof for you.
Stuart Wellington
[10:43] Up our next mini is us just talking about Yellowstone so we could further talk about our old person bona fides.
[10:49] And then one about Mosh.
Dan McCoy
[10:51] Yeah.
[10:51] I think you're going to enjoy my flop TV gladiator presentation for the olditudes that I'm going to show.
[10:59] That's a little preview.
Elliott Kalan
[10:59] Gladiator is not the – oh, gladiator is the next one that we're doing based on when this is released.
Dan McCoy
[11:03] After.
[11:03] Yeah.
[11:04] Yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[11:05] Okay.
[11:05] So if I understand correctly because it was a while since you told us what this game is.
[11:09] Are you – you're telling us the goof – are we supposed to guess the movie?
[11:12] Yeah, guess the movie from the goof.
[11:14] Okay.
[11:15] The mutant movie.
Dan McCoy
[11:16] Yeah, the mutant movie.
Stuart Wellington
[11:17] Okay.
[11:17] So we have a little bit of a filter on this one.
Dan McCoy
[11:20] Yes, exactly.
[11:21] This one I think –
Stuart Wellington
[11:22] So it's not going to be like Victor Victoria.
[11:25] Yes.
[11:25] Okay.
[11:26] It's been a while since I've seen Victor Victoria but I don't remember there being mutants.
[11:30] No, I don't think so.
Elliott Kalan
[11:30] And it's not going to be like ordinary people because there's the opposite of mutants.
[11:36] Yes.
[11:36] Thank you.
[11:37] Yes.
[11:37] Okay.
Stuart Wellington
[11:39] That's what Cameron Hodge is trying to create a world of ordinary people.
[11:43] Because he loves that movie.
[11:44] Yeah.
[11:45] Finally, a movie with no mutants in it.
Elliott Kalan
[11:46] Wait.
[11:46] Mutant Tyler Moore is in this movie.
[11:49] Oh, shit.
[11:50] Oh, no.
[11:51] Somebody called Nimrod.
Dan McCoy
[11:54] Okay.
[11:55] I think this –
Elliott Kalan
[11:56] I love that Dan was like, no X-Men stuff.
[11:58] And immediately, it's all X-Men references.
Dan McCoy
[12:01] We're going to start off on one.
[12:02] I think it's going to be pretty easy.
[12:04] You know, put the training wheels on at the beginning.
[12:06] Here we go.
[12:07] Thanks.
[12:08] The two moons of Mars appear in several background shots but they're incorrectly depicted.
[12:13] They're both shown as being much larger than they would appear in real life.
[12:16] Phobos would appear to be about a third of the size of the Earth's moon.
[12:20] And Deimos would be a little larger than a star.
[12:23] In addition, Phobos orbits Mars faster than Mars rotates.
[12:28] So, it would appear to rise in the west and set in the east and should have moved visibly with respect to the other moon even from one shot to the next.
Stuart Wellington
[12:36] Real quick, before we pick the movie, I just need to say I think it is insane that this movie was allowed to be released in, I'm assuming, movie theaters.
[12:45] With this kind of a fucking goof.
[12:47] Egregious goof.
Elliott Kalan
[12:48] It's misleading all of America's youth, certainly.
[12:51] Yeah.
[12:52] Who haven't gotten yet the knowledge they need about Mars' moons.
Dan McCoy
[12:55] Their moon expectations have been set incorrectly.
Elliott Kalan
[12:58] I know what movie I think this is, but Stuart, do you want to go first?
[13:00] I saw a look of, or Felipe, do you want to go first?
S3
[13:02] How do we call our names?
[13:04] We raise our hand.
[13:05] How do we do this?
[13:06] I think just yell it out.
Elliott Kalan
[13:08] You've already thought more about this game than Dan had.
[13:11] Let me finish the goof.
Dan McCoy
[13:12] Okay.
[13:13] Oh, there's more to it?
[13:14] No, no, no.
[13:14] I'm saying don't cut me off, but let me finish the goof and then just, if you got it, yell it out.
[13:20] Total Recall.
[13:22] Yes, it's Total Recall.
[13:23] Yes, let's get our asses to Mars with Total Recall.
Elliott Kalan
[13:26] Those people can't worry about the moons.
[13:28] They need to breathe.
[13:29] People need air.
Dan McCoy
[13:31] Yeah.
[13:31] Now, what do you think?
[13:32] I assume that we're all big fans of Total Recall as a movie movie.
[13:36] Yeah, it's fine.
[13:38] Oh, it's got to be a good beat up Elliot.
Elliott Kalan
[13:40] Wow.
[13:42] The only reason Total Recall doesn't do it for me the way that I wish it would is that I can't help it.
[13:47] This is me bringing this to it.
[13:48] Every time I watch Total Recall, I think about how great RoboCop is and I go, why is this movie not as good as RoboCop?
[13:53] No.
[13:54] That's hard though.
[13:55] That's unfair.
[13:55] It's hard.
[13:56] It's hard.
[13:56] You take the best movie the guy ever made and he compares other movies to it.
[14:00] It's hard.
[14:00] And he's got a good career.
[14:02] Yeah, well, sure.
Dan McCoy
[14:03] Maybe my like fourth favorite barrel of the movie, but like it's still great.
Elliott Kalan
[14:06] After what?
[14:08] Soldier of Orange?
Dan McCoy
[14:09] I like RoboCop and Starship Troopers more and I'm sure there's like one of his artier ones that would get in there.
Elliott Kalan
[14:17] I love how you're like, that's my fourth favorite.
[14:21] One and two and I bet there's a third one in there.
Dan McCoy
[14:23] Well, I'm pretty sure.
[14:25] Third movie TBD.
[14:26] I can't remember.
[14:27] Showgirls probably.
[14:28] I can't remember all the artier ones, but I know that there's like at least one of those that I probably like.
[14:33] He's number one.
[14:34] I was going to say his flesh.
[14:36] Benedetta's great.
[14:37] Yeah.
Stuart Wellington
[14:38] Of course it's Benedetta.
Dan McCoy
[14:39] I'd probably put a black book before.
Stuart Wellington
[14:42] Because Benedetta's super sexy.
Dan McCoy
[14:44] That's why you'd pick that one.
[14:45] Benedetta's great.
[14:46] It's not, it's not, it's not, I would put it below Total Recall for me.
[14:49] Okay.
[14:50] Because nobody gets their ass to Mars.
[14:51] No one gets their ass to Mars.
[14:52] It's true.
[14:53] No eyes bug out.
Elliott Kalan
[14:54] I was sitting through Benedetta waiting for somebody to get their ass to Mars.
[14:57] It just didn't happen.
[14:58] They've got to get their ass to Mars.
[15:00] And when I was watching Showgirls, I'm like, I'm seeing asses, but they're not going to Mars.
Dan McCoy
[15:04] Getting to Mars.
[15:05] They're out of this world.
[15:07] That's for sure.
[15:07] They're mooning.
[15:08] There's no Mars in this movie.
[15:09] They're.
[15:10] Yeah.
[15:10] Thank you.
[15:11] A lot of moons.
[15:11] Those are different moons.
Elliott Kalan
[15:12] Yeah.
[15:12] Very good point.
[15:15] Rotating.
[15:15] But not at the right velocity or in the right direction.
[15:18] You should have seen the group I wrote for Showgirls.
[15:20] Yeah.
Stuart Wellington
[15:21] Well, what do you think of this as a mutant movie though?
[15:24] I think the New York Times, by the way, just like listed Showgirls in the like so bad it's good.
[15:29] They're doing like a series of like so bad it's good things.
[15:32] And I'm like, come on.
[15:32] Stepping on our stuff.
[15:33] Come on, guys.
[15:34] Stop trying to bite on our fucking steez.
[15:36] Yeah.
[15:37] But yeah, like, yeah, Showgirl's good, idiot.
[15:41] I don't know why you have to claim it's bad.
[15:43] It's good.
[15:45] Don't make me push you into the stuff in a locker.
Dan McCoy
[15:47] I think it's better than people said at the time.
[15:54] Like, it's trying to do a thing that people didn't recognize.
[15:57] It does have like a lot of like bad performances and stupid stuff in it.
Elliott Kalan
[16:01] I think it's still not that good.
[16:04] But much like Starship Troopers, I am baffled that when it came out, people didn't really understand what it was trying to do or what was going on with it.
Stuart Wellington
[16:10] More like when Starship Troopers hit streaming and all the fucking Gen Z kids were like, oh, this movie is low-key fascist.
[16:17] And you're like, what?
[16:18] It is high-key satirical fascism.
Elliott Kalan
[16:21] Like, that's – I mean that's what the critics did at the time.
[16:23] They were like, Verhoeven may not realize that he's made a fascist movie.
[16:27] And it's like, did you see the movie?
[16:28] The end director.
Stuart Wellington
[16:30] This guy who grew up during the end of World War II.
Elliott Kalan
[16:34] The guy at the end when Doogie Howser is just wearing like a Nazi uniform basically.
[16:38] They're like, he may not realize it, but he has him in a Nazi uniform.
[16:41] Like, I think he knows.
[16:43] But it's similar to – there's so many old movies.
[16:45] And then we'll talk about whether we like this movie as a mutant movie.
[16:47] Verhoeven may have done a whoopsie.
[16:49] We've talked about this before.
[16:50] We're like, there's so many old movies where something deliberately sexually – a sexual innuendo takes place.
[16:56] And people are like, oh, can you believe that?
[16:58] There's the scene in – what is it?
[17:00] The Gang Saw here where they're dancing around with these huge bananas.
[17:03] And they've got like these huge bananas between their legs.
[17:05] And people are like, oh, I guess they didn't know what they were doing.
[17:07] It's like they knew what – people knew what penises looked like.
[17:10] Like they understood.
[17:10] Like huge bananas.
[17:11] Like sex wasn't invented in 1968.
Dan McCoy
[17:14] And to return to one of my weird obsessions, I was watching an episode of Jim.
[17:18] And the holograms were talking about how later on they have to go to the Rock Hard Cafe.
[17:23] And I'm like, Jim knows what it's doing.
Elliott Kalan
[17:25] Jim knows that's a joke for the adults in the audience.
[17:27] Yeah.
S3
[17:27] That's a joke for Dan.
Stuart Wellington
[17:30] I would argue that like pre-1960s, people were more interested in sex because there was far less other options of entertainment.
[17:38] You couldn't go play fucking video games.
Elliott Kalan
[17:41] They couldn't.
[17:41] That's true.
[17:42] I mean in the 1960s, they couldn't play video games particularly either.
Stuart Wellington
[17:46] That's what I'm saying.
[17:47] Like but even before.
[17:48] Like go back to dawn of time.
[17:50] Like you have far fewer things to entertain you.
[17:51] Yeah, there weren't any other times of the dawn of time.
Dan McCoy
[17:53] That's for sure.
Elliott Kalan
[17:54] But it's a little bit like how in the – for many years when they would translate like Greek drama and Greek poetry, they'd edit out all the homoerotic stuff.
[18:04] Because it was like, well, this stuff is wonderful, but we can't let anyone know that they knew about this back then.
[18:08] Like this was not a thing.
[18:09] This is not a thing that they could know about.
[18:11] It's like, I don't know, man.
[18:12] This has been going on for a long time, you know.
[18:14] Yeah.
[18:14] People have been doing it with different parts of their body and other people for a long time.
Dan McCoy
[18:19] Okay.
[18:20] So anyway, is Total Recall a mutant movie we like?
Elliott Kalan
[18:22] Is that what you're saying?
Dan McCoy
[18:23] Yes, yes.
[18:24] Well, yeah.
[18:24] How do you like it as a mutant movie?
[18:25] Certainly it's got a quato in it.
[18:27] That's a pretty good mutant.
Stuart Wellington
[18:28] And what's his name?
[18:30] Benny with his little weird arm?
[18:32] Yeah.
[18:33] Maybe he was a weird arm.
[18:34] Yeah.
[18:35] But, but, but, Benny's weird arm.
[18:36] And the triple-breasted lady.
[18:38] Thank you.
[18:38] And the triple-breasted lady.
[18:39] And the triple-breasted lady.
Dan McCoy
[18:40] Thank you.
[18:40] It took us a while to get there.
[18:42] Maybe she's just an alien.
[18:44] I don't know.
[18:45] It's hard to say who's a mutant, who's an alien.
[18:46] I think that's the only thing.
Elliott Kalan
[18:46] It's hard to know who's a mutant and who's an alien, much like in the latter-day Ninja
[18:50] Turtles comics.
Stuart Wellington
[18:51] Wait, are there any aliens in the movie?
[18:54] I thought it was all.
[18:54] I mean, they're all on Mars.
[18:56] I mean.
[18:59] They're literally extraterrestrial.
[19:00] Yeah.
[19:01] There's no extraterrestrial characters unless you count people who are born on Mars.
[19:05] They're all colonists is what you're saying.
Elliott Kalan
[19:08] They're all human in origin.
Stuart Wellington
[19:10] It's been a while since I've seen Total Recall.
Elliott Kalan
[19:11] Then do you think the triple-breasted woman is, do you think she was born that way or is that
[19:14] a surgical augmentation?
[19:15] Is she a natural mutant or no?
[19:17] It could be.
Stuart Wellington
[19:18] Yeah.
[19:18] I mean, it could be either, dude.
Elliott Kalan
[19:20] I think we need the spinoff series.
[19:22] The spinoff Netflix series just about this one character.
[19:24] The prequel.
[19:25] The prequel series that ends with her in that bar.
Stuart Wellington
[19:27] I mean, the prequel will cover everything.
[19:29] Like, every character explaining everything.
[19:31] Explaining how they invented those, like, x-ray walking things, you know.
[19:37] Yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[19:37] How the Johnny Cab got programmed.
Dan McCoy
[19:39] Yeah.
[19:40] This horrible trend of, like, television.
[19:42] Can I tell you, like, so, as you know, my wife-
[19:47] They're making a show about Ghostbusters.
[19:49] Yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[19:51] Well, that's an error.
[19:52] Okay.
[19:53] That one may be interesting.
[19:54] That's not a prequel.
Dan McCoy
[19:55] It's in between two existing properties.
[19:56] Exactly.
Dan McCoy
[19:56] It's set within continuity.
[19:59] No, you know, you know that Audrey, my wife, is a big fan of mysteries.
[20:05] British cozy mysteries in particular.
[20:07] Yep.
[20:07] Will watch any old crap as she will freely admit.
Elliott Kalan
[20:13] If someone gets stabbed and there's a scene of a teacup being placed back in a saucer, she will watch it.
Dan McCoy
[20:18] Yeah.
[20:18] And there's a new, like, Tommy and Tuppence series, which is, like, Agatha Christie's third most popular detectives.
[20:26] You know, after Poirot and Miss Marple, there's also this married couple who are kind of, like, a less amusing Nick and Norrell Charles.
[20:32] They're just, like, you know, like, oh, you know, we're a couple and it's fun to solve mysteries.
[20:38] And this fucking TV show starts out before they're a couple with, like, will they or won't they shit.
[20:45] I'm, like, why?
[20:47] Why does every TV show have to do this?
[20:49] It's, like, what do you really want to see is the stuff that happened before the shit you want to see.
[20:53] Like, just, like, the fun stuff is them being a fun couple just doing mystery stuff.
[20:59] Anyway.
[21:00] So they're not doing mystery stuff.
[21:01] It's just about them dating.
[21:02] They still do mysteries.
[21:03] But, you know, there's just a bunch of them.
[21:05] Are they mutant, though?
[21:07] Thank you.
[21:08] Thank you for getting us back on track.
Elliott Kalan
[21:09] Thank you for continuing the Flophouse theme of the guest keeping us more on track than the host.
Stuart Wellington
[21:13] Yeah, let's check under the hood and see if they're mutants.
[21:15] Okay, okay.
[21:16] I'm going to say Total Recall.
[21:16] Let's peel off the layers of outerwear that I'm assuming they're wearing in this British mystery.
Elliott Kalan
[21:21] Yeah, I'm going to say Total Recall works for me as a mutant movie.
Dan McCoy
[21:24] Okay, okay.
[21:25] Yeah.
[21:25] I agree.
[21:26] Yeah.
[21:27] Here's another egregious goof.
[21:31] It goes like this.
[21:32] It would be impossible to channel gas into the subway system without it escaping.
[21:37] Escaping into the air above ground.
Elliott Kalan
[21:42] So...
[21:42] Subway is a money train.
[21:45] Seems to be a goof based on the Om Shurinko terror attack in the Tokyo subway system.
[21:52] Is it a...
[21:54] What horrible...
S3
[21:55] Is Tetsuo the Iron Man a mutant?
[21:56] Is that it?
[21:57] Sorry?
[21:58] No.
[21:59] Tetsuo the Iron Man?
[22:00] Is he a mutant?
Stuart Wellington
[22:01] Yeah, is Tetsuo the Iron Man a mutant, Dan?
[22:04] What about Tetsuo 2, the body hammer?
Dan McCoy
[22:06] I think he would count as a mutant, right?
[22:08] He's like a techno mutation, sort of.
[22:11] Cast in the sewer system.
Elliott Kalan
[22:13] Could be a mutant.
[22:14] So it's not Batman Begins.
Dan McCoy
[22:16] It's not Batman Begins.
[22:18] No.
[22:18] All right.
[22:20] There's many things that it isn't.
[22:21] It's not the name of the rose.
[22:21] But only one thing that it is.
Elliott Kalan
[22:23] Is it the name of the rose?
[22:24] Probably not, though, right?
[22:25] What is the name of the rose?
[22:27] Jeff.
[22:27] Bernie.
[22:28] Oh, okay.
[22:29] Wow.
[22:29] Bernie Rose.
[22:30] He's my lawyer.
[22:31] It would spell her sweet.
[22:32] It's just my agent.
[22:33] Yeah.
Dan McCoy
[22:34] Okay, well...
[22:36] It's like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or something.
[22:39] It's not TMNT.
[22:41] It is another group of letters.
[22:45] I know.
[22:46] Oh, I know.
[22:47] Is it Chud?
[22:47] It is Chud.
[22:48] Thank you.
[22:49] Oh, Chud.
[22:50] Cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers.
[22:54] Recently mentioned on New York One.
Stuart Wellington
[22:57] Because they came back?
[22:59] Yeah, they're back.
[23:00] They're back, baby.
Elliott Kalan
[23:02] It's the bobblehead at the Met Stadium.
[23:05] Oh, I wish.
[23:06] They just had a Godzilla bobblehead at Dodger Stadium and I missed it and I really won it badly.
[23:09] So, I can imagine they're like, Mayor Mom Donnie is angling for the Chud vote in the upcoming elections.
[23:15] It's just him kind of like eating Chud food with Chuds and the sailors.
Stuart Wellington
[23:20] Yeah, I mean, they got sick of voting for Curtis Lee.
Elliott Kalan
[23:22] What is Chud food, do you think?
Dan McCoy
[23:26] Just like humans.
[23:26] Humans, right?
Elliott Kalan
[23:28] I mean, people probably.
[23:28] Oh, I guess they're cannibalistic.
[23:29] Yeah.
[23:29] Yeah, it's right.
[23:30] I mean, cannibalistic would mean other Chuds, which they probably do eat.
Dan McCoy
[23:33] Yeah.
[23:33] Yeah.
[23:34] But they're humanoids, so I guess humans count.
Elliott Kalan
[23:37] Yeah.
[23:38] So, are they mutants?
[23:39] What do you guys think?
Dan McCoy
[23:40] Yeah, I think so, right?
[23:42] Weren't they like humans that were mutated?
Elliott Kalan
[23:44] They must have started out as humans that were mutated, right?
Dan McCoy
[23:47] I don't remember from watching the movie because I saw it a long time ago.
[23:52] I don't know that they explain it.
[23:53] I believe that there was some sort of toxic or nuclear waste involved.
[23:58] So, yes.
[23:59] Daniel Stern's in that one?
[24:00] A very classic.
[24:01] Daniel Stern is in that one, yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[24:03] So, much like at the end of Jason Takes Manhattan when they flush toxic waste through the sewers of New York at, what, midnight every night?
[24:10] That's probably what they did in Chud to make those Chuds, yeah.
S3
[24:13] Is that true?
[24:14] Do they do that?
[24:16] Do they do that?
[24:19] That should be in the goofs of Jason Takes Manhattan, right?
[24:23] Mm-hmm.
[24:23] In actuality, they do not release the toxic waste in New York every day.
Stuart Wellington
[24:29] Also, Jason Takes Manhattan doesn't feature any Chuds in the underground scenes when we all know it's full of fucking Chuds down there.
[24:35] Full of Chuds, yeah.
Dan McCoy
[24:37] Chud Central.
[24:38] Okay.
Elliott Kalan
[24:39] Yeah, Chud Central Station is where the Chuds take the trains, yeah.
Stuart Wellington
[24:43] Goof by omission, I say.
[24:44] Mm-hmm.
Dan McCoy
[24:46] Okay, well, here's a goof that you might enjoy.
[24:51] It's a big might.
[24:53] When the sock puppet is playing the bells at the talent show, some of the bells ring before he picks them up.
[25:00] I could hardly enjoy this film.
[25:02] So consumed with rage was I at this goof.
[25:06] Is that Freaked?
Elliott Kalan
[25:07] It is Freaked.
[25:09] Oh, wow.
[25:09] Freaked!
[25:10] All right.
[25:11] That's a fun movie.
[25:12] I haven't watched it in years, but I remember watching it a lot when I was young because of HBO.
[25:15] And I'd be like, this movie is better than it should be.
[25:18] Even as a kid, I was like, this movie is funnier than it should be.
S3
[25:20] Is that the Alex Winter one?
Elliott Kalan
[25:22] Yeah, with Alex Winter, yeah.
[25:23] There's a joke in it I think about all the time.
[25:25] I never saw that one.
[25:25] Oh, it's a funny movie.
[25:27] There's a joke I think about all the time where it's a commercial for a product and it goes, you're a man.
[25:32] You like cheese.
[25:33] Try machismo.
[25:35] And this hand just crushes a can full of little cheese sports out of it.
[25:39] Anyway, now I'm going to watch that movie.
[25:40] I'm going to find there's tons of jokes that are problematic and I'll be like, ooh.
[25:44] Probably.
[25:44] Probably.
[25:44] I'm sorry.
[25:45] I recommended it.
[25:46] You're to blame.
[25:47] Yeah.
[25:48] I did write and direct it.
[25:50] Yeah.
Stuart Wellington
[25:50] I didn't.
[25:51] It's currently available on Amazon Prime, but it's leaving tomorrow.
[25:56] Tomorrow.
Elliott Kalan
[25:56] Uh-oh.
[25:56] And this episode's not coming out the day we record it.
[25:59] No, it's not coming out for several weeks.
[26:01] Oh, man.
Stuart Wellington
[26:02] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[26:03] This is like finding out a star has exploded light years away.
[26:07] We're only getting the echoes of it.
[26:09] You can't go back and fix it.
Elliott Kalan
[26:10] When you watch Freaked, you are watching the light that was at the set of Freaked years ago.
[26:15] Yeah.
Dan McCoy
[26:17] I stayed away from the trivia because, of course, this is a goofs-themed mini, but in the trivia.
[26:23] In the trivia.
[26:24] You have to have some standards.
[26:26] You know, it's IMDb.
[26:28] I never know the veracity of anything that's said there, but they said that Keanu Reeves got a million dollars to play the dog-faced bully in Freaked.
Elliott Kalan
[26:38] He definitely got – I don't know that he got a million dollars.
Dan McCoy
[26:40] It seems like that's a lot for the budget of what I presume Freaked had.
Elliott Kalan
[26:44] It had a $12 million budget according to Wikipedia.
Dan McCoy
[26:47] So did an $11 million post-Keanu cut budget.
[26:51] And Johnny Knoxville was actually Keanu Reeves' stand-in for a lot of shots there.
[26:57] So –
Elliott Kalan
[26:58] This was – and originally, this is something I think is true, is that this was originally meant to be a vehicle for the butthole surfers.
[27:04] Interesting.
[27:04] I think they were going to star in it and didn't happen.
[27:06] It didn't work out.
[27:08] No.
Dan McCoy
[27:09] No.
[27:10] So what do you guys make of –
[27:12] About the butthole surfers?
[27:13] Yeah.
[27:14] Are the butthole surfers a good mutant band?
Stuart Wellington
[27:16] Me, what was that?
[27:16] Who was in my room last night?
[27:18] That's a banger.
Elliott Kalan
[27:20] I don't –
[27:21] I guess –
[27:23] So what are we judging a good mutant movie by?
Dan McCoy
[27:27] Mutanosity.
Elliott Kalan
[27:29] You know what?
[27:30] Ask a stupid question.
[27:31] Yeah, yeah.
[27:32] No, it's –
[27:32] I mean like –
[27:33] Well, is it –
[27:33] How slimy is it?
[27:35] How –
[27:36] Because there are mutants in it.
[27:37] There are mutated people.
[27:38] But it's also like –
[27:39] It's a comedy movie.
[27:40] It's not like a serious movie.
Dan McCoy
[27:42] So you're saying a mutant movie –
[27:44] It's not going to get nominated for best picture probably.
Elliott Kalan
[27:46] No, probably not.
[27:47] I mean comedies rarely do.
Dan McCoy
[27:49] What kind of movies would you say are serious pictures?
Elliott Kalan
[27:51] No, but one where –
[27:53] Something like Total Recall or Chud,
[27:56] you are meant to take the storyline seriously.
[27:58] Yeah.
[27:59] Whereas this is a –
[28:00] It's kind of a cartoon of a movie.
Dan McCoy
[28:02] No, it's designed to give you a cavalcade of mutants.
[28:07] Of gags and goops.
[28:08] Who have been freaked.
Elliott Kalan
[28:08] Yeah, they have been freaked for sure.
Dan McCoy
[28:11] No, that's a fun –
[28:12] I recall it being a fun movie.
[28:14] I also agree that it's the type of movie that I fear might have stuff that I wince at now.
Elliott Kalan
[28:21] I guarantee you I'll watch it and I'll be like, ooh, ooh.
Stuart Wellington
[28:25] Yeah, we'll go back in remembering it was made in 1993.
Elliott Kalan
[28:29] I didn't even realize that's John Hawks playing the cowboy, the person who's half cow, half man.
[28:34] John Hawks?
[28:35] Yeah.
[28:37] Okay.
Dan McCoy
[28:38] Let's do one more before we'll go to a short break.
[28:42] This one –
[28:43] This is –
Stuart Wellington
[28:44] Take us down mutant lane, Dan.
Dan McCoy
[28:47] I'm going to change this one up.
[28:49] This is from –
Stuart Wellington
[28:50] This is from the –
[28:51] This is when I've gotten used to the format.
[28:54] Oh, boy, yeah.
Dan McCoy
[28:55] I got to keep your head on a swivel.
[28:56] Keeping us on our mutant toes.
[28:58] This is from incorrectly regarded as goofs.
[29:02] Okay.
[29:03] This is long, so listen to the whole thing.
[29:05] Oh, good.
[29:06] The movie is supposedly set in the USA.
[29:10] The person at the bar mentions that Seth eats chocolate bars.
[29:13] This is how a Canadian would describe them.
[29:16] The correct term in America is candy bars.
[29:18] What?
[29:19] Part two.
[29:19] This is incorrectly regarded as a goof.
[29:22] Yeah.
[29:22] While candy bar is common in the U.S., the term chocolate bar is also a standard and widely
[29:26] used descriptor through the U.S.
Elliott Kalan
[29:28] Do you think the same person made both these comments?
[29:31] I don't know.
[29:31] He had a change of heart.
Dan McCoy
[29:32] A character's specific choice of vocabulary does not constitute a factual error.
[29:38] Wow.
[29:39] What –
Elliott Kalan
[29:40] So we know that someone –
[29:42] What was the name of the person that eats –
[29:43] Seth.
Elliott Kalan
[29:43] Or mutant that eats candy bars or chocolate bars?
Dan McCoy
[29:46] Yeah, that's the biggest clue.
[29:49] Seth eats a chocolate bar.
[29:53] Hmm.
[29:54] And it could be Canadian.
S3
[29:57] Not the Canadian cartoonist Seth, right?
[29:59] It's someone else.
Elliott Kalan
[30:00] Yeah, it's a biopic about Seth.
[30:02] It's a good life if you don't weaken the movie.
[30:05] Yeah, yeah.
[30:08] Now, I want to live in the alternate universe where instead of making superhero movies, there's
[30:14] just tons of movies based on Seth comics.
[30:16] So it's like, you see the new Clyde Fans movie?
[30:19] Don't tell me what happens.
[30:20] Don't tell me what happens.
S3
[30:23] Yeah.
[30:25] So –
[30:25] Balookaville, the series, TV series.
[30:28] I love it.
[30:28] I love it.
Elliott Kalan
[30:29] I was just flipping through Wimbledon Green the other day and I was like, can I read this
[30:34] to my children?
[30:35] Oh, there's more swearing in this than I remember.
[30:37] No, I don't think so.
[30:37] Yeah, yeah.
Stuart Wellington
[30:38] I want the Fantagraphics Comics cinematic universe of like Frank and –
Elliott Kalan
[30:44] So at the end of Clyde Fans, suddenly they go, have you heard of the Ghost World Initiative?
[30:48] Sure, yeah.
Stuart Wellington
[30:49] The Comics Journal Initiative.
[30:54] Seth.
[30:55] So it's not Seth from Street Fighter.
Dan McCoy
[30:57] You know, Mr. Policeman, I have given you all the clues.
Elliott Kalan
[31:00] It's probably not Seth or Set, the Egyptian god figure.
[31:06] Probably not.
[31:07] I don't remember being in a movie.
Dan McCoy
[31:09] Now, this mutation happens, I will tell you, in a different way.
[31:15] In a different way.
[31:15] Some people –
[31:16] Like a dance contest?
[31:17] Well, you know, I think that a lot of the mutant movies you'll see, like there's some
[31:22] sort of like toxic or nuclear waste that causes a mutation.
[31:27] This is a more unique thing.
[31:30] Some might dispute whether it's a mutant movie.
[31:32] It's on a lot of lists of mutant movies.
[31:37] So.
[31:39] Seth.
[31:41] Possibly Canadian.
[31:43] But not –
[31:44] Is it the dark backward?
[31:47] All right.
[31:47] I can see that I've stumped you.
[31:48] This one is –
Elliott Kalan
[31:48] Wait, wait, wait.
[31:49] No, wait, wait.
[31:50] Don't –
[31:50] Before you say it, I think I know what it is.
[31:51] I think it is Moulin Rouge.
Dan McCoy
[31:54] Nope.
[31:55] This is David Cronenberg's The Fly.
[31:57] The Fly.
[31:58] Oh.
[31:59] The Fly.
[32:00] Oh, Seth Brundle.
[32:01] Seth Brundle.
[32:02] See, I think of him as Brundle.
[32:04] Yeah, that's the thing.
[32:05] Or Brundle Fly.
[32:06] Yeah.
[32:06] Yeah, yeah.
[32:07] That's what I think of.
[32:08] Oh, I'm like an idiot.
[32:10] So this is like he is –
Elliott Kalan
[32:11] I feel so dumb now that I forgot he eats a chocolate bar at some point in the movie.
Dan McCoy
[32:15] He is self-mutated.
[32:15] Well, like a fly, you know, they love candy.
Elliott Kalan
[32:17] I would say –
[32:18] They love sugar.
[32:19] Because the –
[32:19] I would say the 1950s fly, he is not necessarily a mutant.
[32:22] They have just swapped body parts.
[32:24] But the 80s fly, the Cronenberg one, his DNA has been altered.
[32:27] So he is a mutant.
[32:28] That is mutation, the alteration of DNA.
[32:30] So yes, he is a mutant.
[32:32] Come at me, haters.
[32:33] Come at me if you disagree.
[32:35] Okay.
[32:37] That's a mutant.
[32:37] I got your back.
Stuart Wellington
[32:38] Lock your door, Elliot, in case the haters arrive.
[32:40] I do lock my door usually.
[32:43] Start nailing some boards up on your windows.
Elliott Kalan
[32:45] Oh, no.
[32:47] Not at living haters.
[32:49] I was just –
[32:50] It's all Bill Hader.
[32:51] So it's like –
[32:52] Elliot talks too much.
[32:54] I was just talking about these fly movies with my kids the other day because I made a –
[32:58] I said, help me, help me.
[33:00] And they had no idea what I was talking about.
[33:01] And I was like, when I was a kid, that was just a standard reference you could make.
[33:04] And people kind of generally knew what it was.
Dan McCoy
[33:06] Which is wild because like that was a long time ago even then.
Elliott Kalan
[33:10] No, but it was the kind of movie that like –
[33:12] It was 40 years before, right?
[33:13] Yeah, it was 40 years.
[33:14] But it was the kind of movie that like our parents would have seen on television growing up.
[33:18] And so there was a lot of old references that I knew because they were repeated on shows written by people my parents' age.
[33:24] So it was like their types of stuff, you know.
[33:27] But yeah, that's – yeah.
[33:28] Would you guys say that's a mutant movie?
[33:30] The Fly?
S3
[33:31] The Cronenberg one?
[33:32] Yeah.
[33:32] The Cronenberg one.
[33:33] Yeah, totally.
[33:34] Do you think that's the same thing with this generation?
[33:35] That whole thing about you being able to identify the references from your parents' generation?
[33:41] Because I remember I grew up in Colombia and you used to watch like Tom and Jerry and Flintstones cartoons.
[33:48] Stuff from like the 60s, 50s, 40s.
[33:50] And I don't know if kids today are as aware of, you know.
Elliott Kalan
[33:53] They definitely are not.
[33:55] I think you're right.
[33:55] Like growing up, even growing up in the United States, like TV was just filled with older stuff, you know.
[34:00] And you had to – and now we're really old people.
[34:02] But like you had to watch it because there was nothing else on.
[34:05] You couldn't watch something else.
[34:06] So it was like, yeah.
[34:07] I would get up at early on Saturday mornings and I'm like, what's on TV?
[34:12] Toot or Turtle, Leo the Lion.
[34:14] Like these cartoons my parents don't even remember.
[34:15] A bunch of cartoons.
Stuart Wellington
[34:16] And a bunch of cartoons, even the more current modern cartoons are also like thinly disguised versions of old.
[34:23] Yes.
[34:23] Like sitcoms and TV shows.
[34:25] Yeah, exactly.
Dan McCoy
[34:26] It's the way – we've talked about it before, but it's the way media is delivered now versus then.
[34:31] Like back then, even when cable was around, it was just like, okay, well, we had, you know, a limited number of television channels and not enough TV in all of TV history to fill it all the time.
[34:44] And so we would just get a bunch of old stuff fed to us.
[34:47] Yeah, like dream on.
[34:49] Yeah, like dream on.
[34:50] That was sort of a hybrid situation, a mutant, if you will.
Elliott Kalan
[34:53] But like if you were watching like WPIX, you know, the local New York, Channel 11, the New York's movie station, in the middle of the day and a weekend, they'd just be showing the honeymooners.
[35:02] Because like that's what they had access to.
[35:04] Whereas kids today, they don't know the honeymooners.
S3
[35:08] I would watch like Gilligan's Island and, you know, the Flying Nun.
[35:12] That's from like 30 years before.
Stuart Wellington
[35:15] Yeah.
[35:15] Yeah, they're all watching like Demon Hunter and all these other animes and shit.
[35:19] It's all Blue-Eye Samurai.
[35:20] It's not even like original anime.
[35:22] It's, you know.
[35:22] Real Housewives.
Dan McCoy
[35:23] Yeah, they're all watching – all these kids watching Real Housewives.
[35:26] The Flying Nun.
[35:26] I get it.
[35:27] The Flying Nun.
[35:28] That feels like an idea that –
[35:30] Is she a mutant?
[35:32] No, she just has a habit.
[35:34] A special habit.
[35:35] Oh, I see.
[35:36] But like that seems like an idea that like I can kind of see that getting greenlit today more than like back then when there was less stuff.
[35:43] It's like out of all the stuff, we're like, yeah, let's make this movie about this nun that can like fly because her hat catches the wind or whatever.
Elliott Kalan
[35:51] See, now this is me ripping off –
[35:53] Like Adult Swim or something, right?
[35:55] Yeah.
[35:55] There I can see it, yeah.
[35:57] But this is me ripping off a tweet I saw that the Flying Nun, the first season would be about how she gets that hat, you know, where it's like – and then she wouldn't really fly.
[36:04] She'd like hover every now and then and she'd fly for real at the end of the last episode of the season, you know.
[36:08] She's on the run from the government too or something like that.
Dan McCoy
[36:11] Let's take a short break and we'll be back with more goofs.
S5
[36:21] Hey, guess what, Sue the subway train?
[36:26] No, not that gross.
[36:28] I'm just trying to tell you I realized what Dr. Game Show is about.
[36:33] You know that part of any game show where you meet the contestants and it's only a 30-second conversation?
[36:39] At our podcast, it turns into two hours of small talk with listeners from around the world.
[36:44] Also, the games we play are the ones that they submitted.
[36:47] We have to play them no matter what.
[36:49] Oh, and Alex is here to help keep the pod running.
[36:52] Hey, I'm here too.
[36:53] Anyway, I like talking to silly billies and playing their weird games.
[36:57] Find it on MaximumFun.org.
[37:00] Dr. Game Show.
Stuart Wellington
[37:02] Wonderful is a podcast where we talk about things we like.
[37:05] That's hard to sell in a promo like this, so we've enlisted the help of piano rock superstar Billy Joel to tell you about some of the topics we've covered.
[37:12] Take it away, real Billy Joel.
S6
[37:14] Diddy Rocks, Ben, Odd Lake, Sign, Wilson, Shire, Circle Time, Sega, Dreamcast, Caesar, Sour, Tower of Annoyed.
[37:21] Keepy, Uppy, Time Capsules, Wayne's World, Cheese Bulls, Wallace, Stevens, Donkey Kong, Fun Size, Almond Joy.
[37:27] They didn't start the podcast.
[37:30] Except that's not true.
[37:32] They didn't want it to.
[37:34] They didn't start the podcast.
[37:37] No, they actually did.
[37:38] That was a fact of it.
Stuart Wellington
[37:40] Listen to Wonderful every Wednesday on MaximumFun.org or wherever you get your podcasts.
[37:45] Thanks, Real Billy Joel.
Dan McCoy
[37:46] No problem, Griffin.

[39:02] The Flophouse has an exciting announcement, and it is the same exciting announcement I've been making for months now because Flop TV is on the air.
[39:11] That's right.
[39:11] Season 4 of Flop TV continues apace.
[39:15] That is the live one-hour streaming directly to your computer video version of the Flophouse.
[39:21] It's like if the Flophouse had its own TV show.
[39:23] We said, why should we wait for some network to give us time or money to make a TV show?
[39:28] Let's do it ourselves.
[39:29] And we did.
[39:30] So, this is Season 4.
[39:31] If you go to theflophouse.simpleticks.com, you will see that, one, tickets are for sale, and, two, that the theme this season is Best Picture Winners.
[39:40] We talked about Green Book.
[39:41] We talked about Greatest Show on Earth.
[39:43] Next up, we're talking about Gladiator, Stewart's least favorite Best Picture Winner, I think.
[39:49] So, how do we see it?
[39:51] I'll tell you how you see it.
[39:51] The first Saturday of every month at 9 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. Pacific, you watch it on your computer.
[39:58] At theflophouse.simpleticks.com, you can buy tickets to see it, either individual shows or you can do what the cool people do and buy the season pass.
[40:06] That's six shows for the cost of five.
[40:08] If you missed any episodes, your ticket will get you access to the video recording of that episode, exclusive access through the end of February when the series will end, and we will put these episodes back in the Flophouse vault where they will languish for probably a couple years is my guess.
[40:26] So, go to theflophouse.simpleticks.com.
[40:28] Come join us live the first Saturday of each month, 9 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. Pacific, or if you can't make it to the live airing, watch the recordings afterwards.
[40:36] It's super fun.
[40:37] You get presentations.
[40:38] You get video segments.
[40:39] The video segment I did for Greatest Show on Earth was me really pushing my acting chops, and you won't know what I'm talking about if you don't watch the video or if you saw the show when we did it.
[40:53] I can't wait to see what part of the fun is seeing what Dan and Stuart do for their extras and then seeing their reaction to what I do for my extras, and it's just super fun.
[41:03] And at the end of the episode, you get a chance to ask your questions, and then we answer them.
[41:07] It's like being at a Flophouse live show, and you don't even have to leave your house.
Dan McCoy
[41:11] Unlike a professional television show, we don't let one another know what we're doing ahead of time because we have more fun that way.
Elliott Kalan
[41:17] Unlike a certain show like Jackass, Dan, that's also part of the fun.
[41:21] So that's theflophouse.simpleticks.com to buy your tickets to Flop TV.
[41:25] If you're on the fence about buying tickets for Flop TV, don't be.
[41:28] Just go buy them.
[41:30] Theflophouse.simpleticks.com now through the end of February.
[41:34] And we're back.
Dan McCoy
[41:36] Here's a goof for you.
Elliott Kalan
[41:37] Okay.
[41:38] Lay it on me.
Dan McCoy
[41:40] Oh, you're going to love it.
[41:41] Goof me up.
[41:42] You're going to love it.
[41:43] This is actually—
Elliott Kalan
[41:44] I'm going to be totally goofed.
[41:44] Just wreck me with this goof.
Dan McCoy
[41:46] These are two sort of related goofs that I've linked.
Elliott Kalan
[41:49] Whoa, whoa, whoa.
[41:50] You said one goof.
[41:51] Two goofs.
[41:52] I didn't say I was getting double-teamed by goofs.
Dan McCoy
[41:54] This is the Daily Double for goofs.
Elliott Kalan
[41:58] You know, the Daily Double is still one question.
[42:01] You get for Jeopardy, but for goofs—
[42:04] You're right.
[42:05] I forgot for—what was this one called?
[42:07] Yikes, the goofs are coming?
Dan McCoy
[42:10] Look out, the goofs are mutating.
[42:12] That's what it was.
[42:14] Okay.
[42:14] Here we go.
[42:16] Goof number one.
[42:18] This is like—let's call it Goof A.
[42:21] The police—
[42:22] That's what they call Goofy in France.
[42:24] The police are continuing.
[42:29] Goof A.
[42:30] Yeah, Goof A.
[42:31] He's a genius, you know.
[42:32] Let's root to Goof.
[42:33] He is the physical comedy of Goof A.
[42:37] He's a good father.
[42:38] Yeah.
[42:39] Yes.
[42:41] The police—
Elliott Kalan
[42:42] Why does Goof A never smoke?
Dan McCoy
[42:45] Goof A captures the American spirit.
[42:49] The police are continuously driving around underground tunnels with their sirens blaring, even when there are no cars, pedestrians, or anything else in the vicinity.
[42:59] That's Goof A.
[43:00] Goof B.
[43:01] It's not really a goof.
[43:02] It's a bad decision, but—
[43:04] Goof B.
[43:05] Toward the end of the film, about five cops and Frank get out of a police car in the drainage shuttle.
[43:11] The lead detective hands Frank a loaded rifle, but points the rifle directly at two cops before handing it over to him.
[43:17] Then Frank proceeds to dangerously point the rifle at two other policemen.
[43:21] Now, you know, in general, this just sounds like police behavior, but these are the Goofs.
[43:27] These are the Goofs, guys.
[43:28] Goofs God gave us.
S3
[43:30] I have maybe an answer.
[43:34] It's a movie I just watched for the first time recently.
[43:37] It would be like from left field for them to pick this one, but remind me maybe of something from Alligator 1980, which is an animal, but it's a mutant animal.
[43:48] That's true.
Dan McCoy
[43:48] I think it would probably qualify—that's not it, but you're in kind of the vague vibe area, like time period feeling.
[44:00] It's not It's Alive, right?
[44:02] It is.
[44:02] It's Alive.
[44:03] I was going to say Die Hard with a Vengeance.
[44:05] About a mutant baby.
Elliott Kalan
[44:07] A mutant baby, because I didn't remember them driving in the tunnels, but I remember the dad getting the gun and then being in the tunnels.
Dan McCoy
[44:13] They're tooling around those tunnels in their cars.
Elliott Kalan
[44:16] It's amazing.
[44:17] My memory of it is mostly about the mutant baby and not so much about them driving around.
S3
[44:21] Is there the Michael Moriarty one?
[44:24] Yeah.
[44:24] The stars in it.
[44:25] Yes.
[44:26] Yeah, yeah.
[44:26] Baby monsters.
Elliott Kalan
[44:28] Music by Bernard Harriman, and the score is very similar to his taxi driver score at times.
[44:33] Yeah.
Dan McCoy
[44:35] I had seen this years ago, and then I saw it again recently because It's Alive 3 was a ridiculous surprise.
[44:42] Oh, yeah.
[44:42] Yeah, we once saw that.
[44:42] Island of the Babies or whatever.
[44:44] Yeah.
[44:44] Island of the Alive.
[44:45] Some friends were like, we got to see the other ones that were prepared, I guess.
Elliott Kalan
[44:49] Part 3 was crazy.
[44:50] That's a crazy movie.
[44:51] Part 3 is crazy.
[44:52] Well, they're not even babies anymore.
[44:53] But they still look like babies, but they're giant, you know?
[44:56] Yeah.
Dan McCoy
[44:58] Oh, yeah.
[44:58] What a nutty movie.
[45:00] Yeah.
[45:00] I mean, even if you don't want to see It's Alive, skip to number 3.
[45:04] I don't think you're going to miss a lot.
[45:06] You'll have a good time.
Stuart Wellington
[45:07] I think you'll be able to pick up the continuity.
Dan McCoy
[45:09] Part 4 is It's Alive goes to college, right?
[45:13] It's College of the Alive.
[45:15] College of the Alive.
[45:16] Thank you.
[45:16] College of the Alive.
[45:17] It was right there.
[45:18] University of the Alive, yeah.
[45:20] You know, we all recently did the Puppet Masters and Castle Freaks.
[45:25] Are you jealous that I got to do Google this 3?
[45:27] That's exactly what I was going to say.
[45:28] I was like, I picked something kind of at random from the list, and I was like, oh, man, Stuart, that fire.
[45:35] You got to do Ghoulies Go to College.
Elliott Kalan
[45:37] I didn't realize there was such delicious food available.
[45:40] Yeah.
[45:40] When I, when I, they told me, when I did it, they were like, we're going to have Stuart for Ghoulies Go to College.
[45:44] Like, they were, they were very excited about that matchup.
Dan McCoy
[45:47] Yeah, I was so pumped.
[45:47] I mean, if you're going to pick someone, obviously it's Stuart, but.
[45:51] Yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[45:51] I got to do the day time ended, because we did that for Mystery Science Theater.
[45:56] I got to tell you, if you want to watch a demo reel for a stop motion animation, the day time ended is not the worst one to watch.
[46:03] So, Dan, which, which movie did you end up doing?
Dan McCoy
[46:05] It was called Vengeance of the Dead.
[46:07] It was a sort of a regional horror movie.
[46:11] Regional?
[46:12] Extremely lower, but.
[46:13] Yeah, you don't know this.
[46:14] Like, there's a whole, like.
[46:16] This is just a term that is used, like, for, like, low budget horror movies that were made, like, way out of, like, Hollywood.
Elliott Kalan
[46:21] I see, but it wasn't like, it was not like, we're, we want to appeal to a specific region with this.
[46:26] It was then.
[46:27] This is like an upper, upper Pacific Northwest.
[46:29] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[46:30] This is the way I would say outside of Hollywood.
[46:32] It's like thief.
[46:32] I see.
[46:33] Yeah.
Stuart Wellington
[46:35] Everybody's eating hot dogs and being Jim Belushi's.
Elliott Kalan
[46:37] We really want, we want our horror movies really to penetrate the Albuquerque metro region.
[46:42] Yeah.
Dan McCoy
[46:43] What, yeah.
[46:43] What's an Albuquerque specific creature we could have?
[46:47] Mm.
[46:48] Yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[46:49] Some kind of tremor, probably.
Dan McCoy
[46:52] Um, guys, what do you think of It's Alive as a mutant movie?
[46:56] Oh, for sure.
[46:57] Yeah, it's a mutant baby.
S3
[46:58] Yeah.
[46:58] The whole series of movies, right?
[47:01] Mm-hmm.
[47:01] Yeah.
[47:02] Yeah.
Stuart Wellington
[47:02] Really keyed into America's fear of mutant babies.
[47:08] It's interesting.
S3
[47:09] It's a life Andy Razor had, both.
[47:11] Mm-hmm.
Elliott Kalan
[47:11] Yeah, yeah, that's true.
[47:12] Yeah, you get the highbrow and lowbrow options.
[47:15] Of fear of parenting.
[47:17] Yeah, yeah.
[47:17] It's the same story.
[47:19] Mm-hmm.
[47:19] I don't know, it's exactly the same story.
[47:21] Like, the body count for the baby in Eraserhead is much lower.
Dan McCoy
[47:25] I think it's interesting, the series It's Alive, like, they do push ahead the continuity, but it's like, okay, yeah, It's Alive.
[47:33] Guy, a couple has a mutant baby.
[47:35] Mm-hmm.
[47:36] Has mixed feelings about this mutant baby.
[47:38] Like, still has affection for it.
[47:41] It's still their baby.
[47:41] Yeah, yeah.
[47:42] But, like, you know, it's killing people.
[47:43] And then the second one is kind of just a retread of the first one, but they're more mutant babies.
[47:49] Mm-hmm.
[47:49] And then the third one is totally wild.
[47:51] It's totally bonkers.
Elliott Kalan
[47:53] Well, so because when they brought James Cameron in to pitch the sequel to It's Alive, he wrote It's Alive on the board and then wrote an S at the end, so it's It's Alives.
[48:00] Yeah.
[48:01] And then he turned that into a dollar sign.
[48:02] And then Jim, we don't understand.
[48:02] That doesn't.
[48:03] That's not.
[48:04] I'm saying there's more babies.
[48:06] Oh, oh, because, like, the babies are not called It's Alives.
[48:08] You could have put It's Alive.
Dan McCoy
[48:09] That would have.
[48:10] Doesn't turn into a dollar sign.
[48:12] No, it doesn't turn into a dollar sign.
Elliott Kalan
[48:12] They need an S at the end to make a dollar sign, yeah.
Dan McCoy
[48:14] Okay, here's a goof for you.
[48:18] Brenda and Bobby notice a bird circling above, and Bobby says it's a turkey bugger.
Elliott Kalan
[48:22] So many good B sounds in that sentence.
Dan McCoy
[48:24] Yeah, it's just like we're in the middle of scenes from Italian restaurant.
[48:29] Brenda and Bobby notice a bird circling.
[48:35] Bobby says it's a turkey buzzard.
[48:38] However, the bird shown is not a turkey buzzard, also known as a turkey vulture, and it is instead a hawk.
[48:44] The calls it make are also not realistic for a vulture or a hawk.
Stuart Wellington
[48:49] So the first part I would say is incorrectly regarded as goof, because just because a character is wrong doesn't make the movie wrong.
[48:56] Yes, the character may be wrong on purpose.
[48:58] Yeah, that's a good point.
Elliott Kalan
[48:59] But how do you explain the calls then?
Dan McCoy
[49:02] That I can't explain.
[49:03] They're coming from inside the house.
Elliott Kalan
[49:07] Oh, it's me making the call to myself.
Stuart Wellington
[49:10] Remember when that was like a wild thing that could happen?
Elliott Kalan
[49:13] Yeah, because people were like, they'd be like, the call's coming from inside the house, and people were like, they have two phone lines in their house?
[49:18] Yeah, yeah.
Dan McCoy
[49:19] Now it's like, yeah.
[49:20] There's a murderer loose with a rich person.
[49:21] Everybody's got a fucking cell phone.
[49:22] Now I'm constantly texting my wife in the other room because I don't want to get up.
Elliott Kalan
[49:26] Exactly.
[49:27] Yeah, the idea of a, I mean, it's right up there with the doctor was a woman where the shock has worn off, you know.
[49:33] It is no longer an unbelievable but possible thing, you know.
Stuart Wellington
[49:36] Or that Pagliacci's a clown.
Elliott Kalan
[49:41] I think that was the twist.
[49:43] I mean, they always, yeah, they always knew he was a clown.
[49:45] They just didn't know he was, anyway.
Dan McCoy
[49:47] Who was the clown is more of a, who's Harry clown?
[49:52] Mona.
Elliott Kalan
[49:53] I love the idea, that story about, that Pagliacci story where it's like, but doctor, I am Pagliacci.
[49:58] It's like, this is a bad doctor.
[50:01] If it's like, hey, I feel, I have deep depression.
[50:03] Why don't you go see this clown?
[50:05] That'll cheer you up, right?
[50:06] No, it's probably rooted somewhere in my psyche.
[50:08] Like, I probably have trauma.
[50:09] I'm not processing properly.
[50:11] Mind off things for like a night, doctor.
Dan McCoy
[50:13] I don't know.
[50:14] You haven't seen Pagliacci's act, right?
[50:17] It's very therapy.
[50:18] It really makes it very deep.
[50:19] Yeah.
[50:20] It's like that clown we saw, Elliot.
Elliott Kalan
[50:23] Yeah, actually, at the ha ha ha ha show.
[50:25] Yeah.
[50:26] What if it was, what if this story goes, this man goes, I'm so depressed.
[50:29] I don't know what to do.
[50:30] And he goes, you should go see Pagliacci's show.
[50:32] Go see him.
[50:32] Okay.
[50:32] And he goes, and Pagliacci is clearly the therapist dressed up as a clown.
[50:36] He goes, for my act, I need you to lie down on this couch and tell me about
[50:41] their childhood.
Stuart Wellington
[50:41] And the two drink minimum.
Dan McCoy
[50:44] This is what we call a bringer show.
[50:46] So I had to prescribe this for you.
Elliott Kalan
[50:50] Everyone there is just his patients.
[50:52] Yeah.
[50:52] I didn't realize this therapy session was really just a way to get us to come see his Pagliacci
[50:57] act.
[51:00] Okay.
[51:01] Well, anyway.
[51:02] Good, good.
[51:02] This means I get 15 minutes for my set.
Stuart Wellington
[51:06] Straight into vampire territory, but that's okay.
Dan McCoy
[51:09] Good, good.
[51:10] Good, good.
[51:11] Oh, come down.
[51:13] Come in.
[51:14] Sit down.
[51:15] I will do some clowning for you.
Elliott Kalan
[51:16] You should go see Pagliacci.
[51:18] He's a great clown.
[51:20] But, but doctor, I am Pagliacci.
[51:22] That's okay.
[51:23] I'm Dracula.
[51:23] He bites him.
Dan McCoy
[51:28] It's gotten so layered.
Elliott Kalan
[51:32] What about this?
[51:33] Here's my other take on this one.
[51:34] Here's my other twist on this before we come back to this bird thing.
[51:36] He goes, you should go see Pagliacci.
[51:38] He's, he's, he's in town, but doctor, I am Pagliacci.
[51:42] And the doctor goes, well, when I asked you to describe yourself, you could have mentioned
[51:45] you were a famous fucking clown.
[51:46] Now I look like a real idiot.
[51:48] Kind of left out some important information there that would have helped me figure you
[51:51] out.
Dan McCoy
[51:52] Unless you tell me things.
Elliott Kalan
[51:54] This is about the work you are willing to put into the relationship.
[51:58] That is what will help you.
[52:00] You're right.
[52:01] You're right.
[52:01] I should have known that you're a famous clown.
[52:03] Yeah, it's not like you wear a grease paint and a mask all over your face during your act.
Stuart Wellington
[52:08] We're going to put it like a hot link to the Pagliacci story.
[52:10] I guess we have to.
[52:11] In this episode, right?
[52:12] So people can.
[52:12] I mean, it's a meme at this point.
[52:14] Just put it in blue and they'll click on it.
Dan McCoy
[52:18] So, this movie.
Elliott Kalan
[52:19] So, they saw, so a guy misidentifies a bird.
Dan McCoy
[52:21] Clue.
[52:22] The key clue is there's someplace where a turkey buzzard might be seen.
Elliott Kalan
[52:26] What a clue.
[52:27] Well, it's a mutant movie.
[52:28] Felipe, if you have this one, I will be so, I will be in such awe because I have no idea.
[52:33] Yeah.
S3
[52:34] I would normally not know it, but it's also another movie I just saw for the first time very,
[52:40] very recently, like two weeks ago, featuring mutants.
[52:44] So, maybe it is.
[52:45] Is it The Hills Have Eyes?
[52:46] It is The Hills Have Eyes.
[52:47] Whoa.
[52:48] Very good.
[52:49] Very good.
[52:50] Because The Hills are mutants.
[52:52] Mm-hmm.
Dan McCoy
[52:52] Yes.
[52:54] They're a hybrid of hill and man.
[52:55] Which one are we talking?
[52:57] Are we talking about the remake?
[52:58] Are we talking about the OG?
[52:59] This is the original.
[53:01] Ah.
[53:01] I watched The Old One.
[53:02] It's been a long time since I saw that.
[53:03] I forgot about the famous turkey buzzard scene.
[53:05] Does the original have a turkey buzzard scene?
[53:05] Turkey buzzard as well.
[53:06] The remake?
[53:07] I don't know.
[53:08] I don't know.
[53:09] Yeah, they got it.
[53:09] I saw...
S3
[53:10] Sorry.
[53:11] No, it's okay.
[53:12] I interrupted you.
Elliott Kalan
[53:13] I was going to say something really dumb.
[53:14] Felipe, what were you going to say?
S3
[53:15] I watched The Old One and I was surprised about how, you know, not very mutant they are.
[53:20] I saw the remake years ago in the theater and they are really mutated in that one.
[53:25] Mm-hmm.
[53:26] Yeah.
[53:26] They're like, like, like Hillbillies gone wild maybe in The Old One.
[53:31] Yeah.
[53:31] I don't know that I would...
Stuart Wellington
[53:32] Is it Michael Berryman?
[53:33] Yeah.
[53:33] Yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[53:34] Yeah.
[53:34] I don't know that I would call them mutants.
[53:35] I think they're just kind of...
[53:36] They're just kind of inbred hill people, right?
[53:38] Yeah.
[53:38] Yeah.
[53:40] I would say, yeah, I would say I don't think that's a mutant movie.
Dan McCoy
[53:43] Well, I mean, there's nuclear testing in that area that's referenced that...
Elliott Kalan
[53:50] I guess.
Dan McCoy
[53:51] I guess.
[53:52] I don't know.
[53:53] I mean, it was...
[53:54] Yeah, I would say.
S3
[53:55] I'm talking about the...
[53:56] The remake is definitely a mutant movie.
[53:58] The original, you can maybe say yes, maybe no.
Elliott Kalan
[54:01] I think they were kind of half doing it either way because when the original came out, there
[54:06] were plenty of movies just about evil hillbillies, basically.
[54:09] Like, they didn't need to be monsters, you know?
[54:12] Yeah.
Dan McCoy
[54:13] This was a...
[54:14] I mean, certainly the inspiration for it was just sort of evil people out in the middle
[54:22] of nowhere because apparently it was inspired by Wes Craven, like stopped at a gas station
[54:27] and like got...
[54:28] There's like some like...
[54:29] And there was a mutant movie in there.
[54:31] With like someone who said to maybe his wife or something and he was like...
[54:38] There might have even been some sort of threat of violence and Wes Craven's like, well, I'll
[54:44] call the police and he's like, we could just kill you and dump you in the mines or whatever.
[54:48] And he's like, okay.
[54:50] So...
Stuart Wellington
[54:51] Can you say that into my little tape recorder so that I can...
[54:54] Yeah.
[54:55] My little ideas tape recorder?
[54:56] That's what Wes Craven carried around.
[54:57] Yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[54:58] Yeah, yeah.
[54:58] He called it his little ideas tape recorder.
[55:00] Mm-hmm.
[55:00] Okay.
[55:00] We could get written that on a piece of scotch tape or a piece of masking tape and put that
[55:04] on there.
[55:04] Yeah.
Dan McCoy
[55:05] Well, we're in the homestretch.
[55:06] There's only two more goofs.
[55:08] Good call.
Stuart Wellington
[55:08] Only two more goofs.
[55:09] Then all the goofs are covered.
Dan McCoy
[55:11] Yeah.
[55:11] There are no more mistakes.
[55:13] We'll close the goof book for goof today.
[55:16] This is a...
[55:17] But this goof has some redactions because otherwise it will...
[55:22] Oh.
Dan McCoy
[55:22] Give it away.
[55:24] Give it away.
[55:25] The redacted live in the sewer of Manhattan in New York City.
[55:29] All right.
[55:30] Sewers handle the bodily waste of several million people.
[55:33] There's no possible way that the redacted could completely avoid coming in contact with
[55:38] human waste while moving through the sewer tunnels.
Elliott Kalan
[55:40] So this has got to be Ninja Turtles, right?
[55:42] This is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Dan McCoy
[55:43] How is it a goof?
Stuart Wellington
[55:45] Gross.
[55:45] Because there's no poop in the movie.
[55:47] What a goof.
[55:48] I mean, do you look like...
[55:49] It's not like you hold a fucking blacklight to them.
[55:51] Where's the ball of sewage?
Elliott Kalan
[55:54] It is true that the Ninja Turtles are really good at finding rooms in the sewer, which I
[55:58] don't think there are very many of, you know?
[56:00] Yeah.
S3
[56:01] There should be like a hard to be a god version of turtles with the realistic sewers.
[56:07] That would be gross.
[56:08] Just sloshing through human waste.
Elliott Kalan
[56:10] Now, here's the thing.
[56:12] I think they missed the bigger goof in the movie, which is that turtles are very hard to
[56:19] teach martial arts to.
Dan McCoy
[56:21] That is amazing.
[56:23] It's unrealistic, the idea that they...
[56:24] This is incorrectly regarded, because these are mutant turtles.
Elliott Kalan
[56:27] Yeah.
[56:28] Yeah, but even mutant turtles are pretty hard to teach martial arts to.
Stuart Wellington
[56:31] Do you have a lot of experience teaching mutant turtle stuff?
[56:33] Yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[56:34] I do.
[56:34] I don't like to talk about it a lot, but yeah, I do.
[56:36] You don't like to talk.
Dan McCoy
[56:38] It didn't work out.
[56:40] Pagliacci is like, I didn't tell you everything about my life.
Elliott Kalan
[56:43] Yeah, you don't know everything.
[56:44] I'm Splinter.
[56:45] I forgot to mention that.
[56:46] Yeah.
[56:46] Yeah.
Dan McCoy
[56:47] You think this is a good mutant movie?
[56:51] Which one?
[56:52] There's like a million ninja turtles movies.
[56:53] Well, this is the first one that I got this off of.
Stuart Wellington
[56:56] Yeah, yeah.
[56:56] This is a good one.
[56:57] I like the suits.
[56:59] I'm into the suits.
[57:01] Yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[57:02] Yeah.
[57:02] Okay.
[57:03] I'd say for sure, yeah.
[57:04] That's a mutiny movie.
[57:05] It fulfills my desire for mutants.
[57:06] Absolutely.
[57:07] Right in the name.
[57:08] The thing it doesn't have is often mutants in movies are gross looking and the turtles are not like gross looking.
[57:13] Like they're not.
[57:14] Quite the opposite.
[57:15] Yeah, they're kind of cute.
[57:15] Yes, they're adorable.
[57:17] I think what usually often mutant implies, especially in like the toxic Avenger type stuff, like mutant implies decay or rot or corruption in some way because of this.
[57:29] Whereas the turtles are, they look totally healthy, you know.
[57:33] But they're in the prime of life.
[57:34] They're teenagers, you know.
[57:35] Yeah, we don't know how the mutation will.
[57:37] They'll affect them all.
S3
[57:38] When they're in their 40s, they'll be horrible to look at, you know.
[57:42] Yeah.
[57:42] When they're last known as.
[57:44] Yeah.
[57:45] Oof.
Elliott Kalan
[57:46] They're terrible.
[57:47] I mean, they don't have to worry about losing their hair, I guess.
[57:49] But they're going to have that thing where like their butt gets really weird and like not, it's both not saggy, but also it's kind of like imploding a little bit.
[57:56] Like that happens to a lot of guys when they get older.
[57:58] I mean, turtles live a long time.
[58:00] That's an exercise issue.
Dan McCoy
[58:01] Maybe teenage turtles are in their 40s.
[58:04] Yeah, that's a good point.
Elliott Kalan
[58:05] Oh, so you're saying that the turtles will die pretty soon is what you're saying.
Dan McCoy
[58:07] I feel like turtles live a long time.
Elliott Kalan
[58:09] That's what I know.
[58:10] Oh, okay.
[58:11] Well, tortoises live a long time.
Stuart Wellington
[58:12] I don't know if turtles live that long a time.
[58:14] They do live long.
[58:16] The, I would say ninja, so wait, when I think of mutants, I think of like, what is it?
[58:22] El Monstro from the end of the substance?
[58:25] Like all like a big, big monster.
Elliott Kalan
[58:27] Yeah, so that's what I think of it is something that is like deformed in some way or that is grotesquely misshapen.
[58:35] An aberration.
[58:37] That's a great way to put it.
[58:38] Exactly.
[58:38] I suppose the turtles, which are a perfection of the form.
[58:41] Yeah.
Stuart Wellington
[58:42] Like Leonardo da Vinci drew.
[58:46] Okay, we got one final goof here.
Dan McCoy
[58:51] I think, I think, I think someone here might get this one.
[58:55] Okay.
[58:56] It goes like this.
[58:57] It's very short.
[58:58] Myron tells Lance to press the third button on the intercom.
[59:02] There's only one button.
[59:05] Terrible goof.
Stuart Wellington
[59:07] Yeah, this is pretty, this sounds like it might be one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life called The Head of the Family.
[59:13] Head of the Family.
[59:15] Myron.
[59:17] Didn't mean to no-scope that one on you guys.
[59:19] Yeah, you just really, you sniped it right away.
[59:22] Coming from downtown.
[59:25] That's the sort of thing where like, if we were recording and I was at home, I would have run all the way over here and answered it.
S3
[59:33] Just duck down to the microphone and go, Myron.
[59:35] The Head of the Family is clearly, clearly a mutant.
[59:37] And I also wanted to add that the castle freak would also be a mutant, right?
Stuart Wellington
[59:42] You're correct.
[59:43] I believe, I would say that Giorgio is a mutant despite the fact that some of his aberrations were inflicted upon him.
[59:54] Mm-hmm.
[59:55] He is not exclusively the subject of, yeah, he is, he is a true outsider.
S3
[1:00:01] And now the invisible maniac, would he be a mutant?
[1:00:05] I know, right?
Stuart Wellington
[1:00:05] I mean, he does play with his DNA to turn himself invisible.
[1:00:08] Man, it seems like all my movies.
[1:00:11] Yeah.
[1:00:11] I mean, when the granny ingests the, what, Cree Shou?
[1:00:13] Can we call them the mutant trilogy from now on?
[1:00:16] Yeah, I think we have to, yeah.
[1:00:17] I think stories sold about mutants.
[1:00:19] I am kind of a mutant.
Dan McCoy
[1:00:20] I'm not quite sure why Giorgio's a mutant, though.
[1:00:23] But I think that he, like.
[1:00:24] I mean, he's a natural mutation rather than a.
Elliott Kalan
[1:00:27] I mean, every human being is a natural mutation.
[1:00:29] That's just how genetics works.
Dan McCoy
[1:00:30] So maybe every movie's a mutant movie.
Elliott Kalan
[1:00:32] Yeah, they're all, you know what?
[1:00:34] Ordinary people, all these movies are, the name of the rose, they are mutant movies.
[1:00:37] We're all mutants.
[1:00:38] Green Book.
[1:00:39] Out of Africa.
[1:00:40] Exactly.
[1:00:40] All of them.
[1:00:41] Every movie.
[1:00:41] If it's a real movie, Out of Africa would be.
[1:00:45] If Out of Africa exists, which we won't find out until February.
[1:00:48] Guys.
[1:00:48] But yeah, every, that's how human generation and evolution works is through mutation.
[1:00:52] So we're all, yeah, it's all mutant movies.
[1:00:54] So forget what I said about The Hills Have Eyes, mutant movie.
[1:00:57] They're all mutant movies.
[1:00:58] Every movie's a mutant movie.
Dan McCoy
[1:00:59] This is going to come out after the Greatest Show on Earth show, but like people can obviously
[1:01:04] watch it still with a ticket.
[1:01:07] Yeah, we won't stop you.
[1:01:08] You don't have to watch it live.
[1:01:10] That's one of the beauties of the form.
[1:01:11] But I was, I'm doing the summary for Greatest Show on Earth and just as like a little like,
[1:01:18] you know, for prep.
[1:01:19] A little teaser.
[1:01:20] I like looked at the Wikipedia page and I'm like, wow, this movie is about something that
[1:01:26] I did not expect.
[1:01:27] And I don't want to spoil it for you if you haven't watched the movie yet, but there are
[1:01:31] elements in Greatest Show on Earth that I'm like, what?
[1:01:35] That's what this movie's about?
[1:01:37] So look forward to that.
Elliott Kalan
[1:01:39] Or in the past.
[1:01:40] So if you haven't, yeah.
[1:01:41] Again, light of a dying star.
[1:01:43] Or remember back to when you discovered that for yourself.
[1:01:46] Yeah.
Stuart Wellington
[1:01:47] Yeah.
[1:01:47] So those are the mutant movies.
[1:01:49] So did we all agree that Head of the Family is a great mutant movie, right?
[1:01:54] Everybody agree with that?
[1:01:54] Oh yeah, one of the top ones.
[1:01:56] Look at the size of that head.
Elliott Kalan
[1:01:57] I still haven't seen Head of the Family.
[1:01:58] I mean, hey, your kids are about the right age.
[1:02:00] That's true.
[1:02:01] I've seen the other two movies.
[1:02:02] I don't know about that.
[1:02:03] They love heads.
[1:02:04] They love heads.
[1:02:04] They love heads.
Dan McCoy
[1:02:05] Jacqueline Lavelle is very new to that movie for a lot of it.
[1:02:08] That's just human bodies, dog.
[1:02:10] Yeah.
[1:02:11] Come on.
[1:02:12] The most beautiful of mutation.
[1:02:13] A human body.
[1:02:15] And I'll tell you something.
[1:02:16] She's putting in a good performance in that movie.
Elliott Kalan
[1:02:17] She gives a great performance in that movie.
[1:02:19] Yeah.
[1:02:20] Nobody's saying she's giving a bad performance to Anne.
[1:02:22] You're imagining that.
Dan McCoy
[1:02:22] I'm just giving her credit that she probably did not get at the time.
[1:02:27] The types of movies she was in, she probably didn't get the good feedback that she needed,
[1:02:32] but she was great at that movie.
Elliott Kalan
[1:02:34] Head of the Family is on Tubi.
[1:02:35] Maybe I'll watch it next.
Dan McCoy
[1:02:39] Felipe, before we go, is there something you want to plug?
[1:02:43] I know that you're going to be in New York soon for the Comic Con.
[1:02:48] Is that true?
[1:02:49] Did I remember that correctly?
[1:02:50] Yes.
S3
[1:02:51] I wanted to ask, when is this coming out?
Dan McCoy
[1:02:54] That is a good question, and I think I can answer it for you.
[1:02:58] I believe it will come out on October the 10th.
S3
[1:03:05] Okay.
[1:03:05] Okay.
[1:03:06] Perfect.
[1:03:08] October the 10th.
[1:03:09] So, I'll be in New York, like you said, for the Comic Con.
[1:03:14] The first issue of our Toxic book is coming out on the 7th of October,
[1:03:19] and the Comic Con is from October 8th to 11th.
[1:03:22] I will be around.
[1:03:23] I don't have a table myself, but I will be sitting with Justin Jordan,
[1:03:27] a friend of mine, at the Artist Sally.
[1:03:31] October 10th, the day this episode is coming out,
[1:03:34] there's a signing at Forbidden Planet with Matt Bores,
[1:03:38] with Lloyd Kaufman, of the Toxic Avenger issue, number one.
[1:03:42] From 4 to 7 p.m.
[1:03:45] And a week later, on October 17th, we'll be with Third Eye Comics in Glen Burnie, Maryland.
[1:03:55] I think it's around Baltimore.
Stuart Wellington
[1:03:56] It is.
[1:03:57] Yeah, that's where I had my bachelor party.
[1:03:59] Yep, Stuart knows Glen Burnie well.
[1:04:01] Because that's where the headquarters for the Warhammer people used to be.
S3
[1:04:05] Exactly.
[1:04:06] We're going to have a signing also there, October 17th.
[1:04:10] And that's it.
[1:04:11] Follow me on social media at S-O-B-R-E-I-R-O and Instagram.
[1:04:16] And I'd also like to plug, you know, I am a MaxFun supporter.
[1:04:22] I used to support a bunch of shows, but they've been leaving the network.
[1:04:26] And right now, the only show I'm supporting is, you know, you're listening to it right now.
[1:04:32] Thank you for keeping it up.
[1:04:34] And I'm listening to the best movies each month.
[1:04:39] I listened to the first episode right now.
[1:04:41] I loved it.
[1:04:42] You know, I'm a huge fan.
[1:04:44] The last time I was in New York, I went to meet Stuart in person.
[1:04:49] It was a huge moment for me as a longtime Flop fan.
[1:04:53] And, you know, thank you for having me, guys.
[1:04:56] Oh, no problem.
[1:04:57] Thank you for being here.
Stuart Wellington
[1:04:57] Yeah, I remember you were out for a Comic-Con and came by the bar and we got to hang out.
[1:05:02] And you kept me company from all the weirdos who normally come to my bar.
S3
[1:05:07] With previous guest Alejandro Arbona also.
Stuart Wellington
[1:05:10] Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Elliott Kalan
[1:05:12] Thank you so much for joining us.
[1:05:14] And I want to say again, yeah, the Toxic book, what's the full title of it again?
[1:05:20] It's Toxic Avenger versus…
[1:05:22] The Noxious Offender.
[1:05:24] Toxic Avenger versus Noxious Offender.
[1:05:26] And it's really fun.
[1:05:28] I recommend it.
[1:05:29] If you have any interest in anything trauma-ish, then you should pick it up because it's really good.
[1:05:36] And it looks, like I said, it looks fantastic.
[1:05:38] The art looks great.
[1:05:39] Yeah.
[1:05:39] So, it's well worth it.
Dan McCoy
[1:05:41] But, yes, thank you to all of our listeners.
[1:05:46] Felipe mentioned Maximum Fun.

[1:06:14] We will see you next time.
[1:06:17] Bye.
[1:06:18] Bye.
