[0:00] This week we discuss Kiefer Sutherland in Mirrors, the film that decided that the most scary part of any horror movie is that part where something unexpected is seen in a mirror, and said, let's just make a whole movie of that.

[1:35] So, what's going on today, Dan? Other than, you know, St. Patrick's cheer.

[1:40] Well, what's going on is that we watched a little movie.

[1:43] Oh, right.

[1:44] Called Mirrors.

[1:45] Oh, nice.

[1:48] Starring Kiefer Sutherland.

[1:50] And Amy Smart.

[1:52] Smart.

[1:53] Ames.

[1:54] Nice. This was a great movie.

[1:57] Was it?

[1:58] Well, the thing is that it had, well, I mean, it was a great movie if you base the quality of a movie on how appropriate the title is.

[2:09] Yes, then this was the greatest movie ever made.

[2:11] Because there's a lot of stuff about mirrors in this movie.

[2:13] Yeah, I think there's probably, I wouldn't say it's an exaggeration to say that there's a mirror in every scene of this movie.

[2:19] This movie has the kind of one-to-one relationship between its plot and its title that you usually only find in porn.

[2:26] Where the title tells you what you're going to find in the movie.

[2:29] Wait, can you be more explicit about that?

[2:32] I won't get too explicit, but it's called like Naughty Nurses.

[2:35] You're going to find some nurses having sex.

[2:37] Probably.

[2:38] Or like Mighty Milkmaids might have lactating women.

[2:41] Or just nurses that have malpractice suits brought against them.

[2:44] Yeah, well, that wouldn't really be porn.

[3:10] I prefer to think of him as Kiefer Sutherland of the cowboy way.

[3:20] He's been a little typecast lately, ever since he was on that 24 Hours show.

[3:24] Ever since he's been a successful actor on a successful television show, he's been typecast.

[3:29] Yeah, everybody thinks that he's always this hard-nosed FBI agent guy who's only got 24 hours to live or something.

[3:39] He's got to spend a lot of time talking on the phone.

[3:42] It'd be great if that was the premise.

[3:43] And then by the fourth season, it's like, you only have 24 hours to live again?

[3:47] It's like, Mr. President, I'm going to need the antidote right away.

[3:51] Nope, not until you finish the case.

[3:53] You can't do that this time, Keith Sutherland.

[3:58] Wait, so his character is named Keith Sutherland?

[4:02] Yeah, it's hard.

[4:04] It's like Jerry Seinfeld playing himself.

[4:08] When he played Jeremy Seinfeld.

[4:11] Okay, this is the most gibberish we've started off a podcast with.

[4:15] Mirrors is a fairly bland film.

[4:17] If anyone's tuning in to the Flophouse, that episode, I think this is 34, it's going to be very good.

[4:24] Okay, well, the story here is that we watched this shitty movie, and now we're going to talk about it for a little while.

[4:30] What's the story of the movie, though? What happens in the film?

[4:32] Okay, stick with me.

[4:34] Basically, this dude totally needs to get a job, so he gets a job as a...

[4:39] He's a former police officer who's dealing with alcohol problems.

[4:42] Okay, so he needs a job because he's a former police officer,

[4:46] and his pretty hot wife doesn't like him seeing his kids because he's got a drinking problem, I think.

[4:52] And he's taking psychological medication.

[4:54] Yeah, so he starts...

[4:55] He starts to have some rage issues, maybe.

[4:57] Yeah, so he starts working at this burned-up old department store in the middle of Manhattan.

[5:02] The Mayflower.

[5:03] Yeah, which I think used to be a sanitarium or something?

[5:07] It was a sanitarium, then it was converted into a department store, and then it burned down in the 50s.

[5:11] And this prime piece of real estate...

[5:13] Wait, was it an Indian burial ground, too?

[5:15] No, I don't think so.

[5:16] Okay.

[5:17] This is a building. It's huge. It's an enormous building on 6th Avenue in the 20s.

[5:21] And it's not just that there's a building. The building is surrounded by yards.

[5:25] It has a fair amount of landscaped land around it, and it's insane that this building has been...

[5:30] This spot has lain fallow, as Dan put it, for 50 years.

[5:34] In the middle of Manhattan.

[5:35] Well, I mean, I don't think the ghosts that inhabit the building were going to sell.

[5:39] But Chelsea, a very valuable piece of real estate.

[5:43] So Keith gets his job at this department store.

[5:48] His name is Matt Carson in the movie.

[5:50] Yeah, and he...

[5:51] It's a good Western name.

[5:52] Yeah, he starts seeing things, like he starts seeing shit in the mirrors.

[5:57] Like burned-up bodies and stuff.

[5:58] Yeah, and he does a little bit of research, and then he realized that he starts seeing shit outside of the department store.

[6:04] But still in mirrors.

[6:05] Yeah, it's all magic.

[6:06] And mirrors are following him around.

[6:08] Pretty quickly, he realizes the mirrors are the problem.

[6:11] And then he thinks, like, the mirrors are going to...

[6:14] It's like Sister tries to tell him...

[6:15] Where did my life go wrong?

[6:16] He's staying with his sister, and she tells him he's crazy and he should quit his job.

[6:20] And he's like, fuck that, I need this job.

[6:22] And then a mirror version of her makes her rip her own jaw off in a totally awesome scene.

[6:28] The first scene of the movie is a guy, he's running away from mirrors.

[6:32] And a mirror image of himself cuts his throat, so his throat also opens up.

[6:37] So in this one, in the mirror, this mirror version of Amy Smart starts ripping her own jaw off.

[6:41] And Amy Smart, her jaw also gets ripped off.

[6:44] It's pretty awesome and kind of gross.

[6:46] It's very gross.

[6:47] So, watch it.

[6:50] Okay, moving forward.

[6:53] Gabe Rossellin totally flips out.

[6:55] He's like, what?

[6:56] My sister?

[6:58] But you're not even in the department store.

[7:01] So he goes to his wife's house and starts painting over the mirrors.

[7:04] Yeah, because that's the solve.

[7:05] To protect his wife and children.

[7:06] So he tries to break the mirrors.

[7:07] And when he shoots the mirrors, they immediately heal.

[7:09] Well, the mirrors in the department store do.

[7:11] Yeah, because of their magic.

[7:12] Yeah.

[7:13] Oh, yeah, so he's painting over mirrors.

[7:15] His ex-wife thinks he's crazy.

[7:18] And then he proves he's not crazy somehow.

[7:21] I don't remember.

[7:22] He goes and, like, the mirror gives him a name.

[7:25] The mirror, everyone who's been a security guard at this department store,

[7:29] the mirrors have been telling them to find this person with this name.

[7:33] What is it?

[7:35] Yeah, something like that.

[7:36] And they haven't been able to, so it's been killing their families.

[7:39] His wife, he tries to find this Eseker person.

[7:41] He has a friend in the police force who's helping him do research,

[7:43] and his wife starts seeing things in mirrors also.

[7:45] You would think the mirrors would be a little more explicit.

[7:48] Like, after the first or second security guard totally fucks up,

[7:51] they'd be like, it's Anna, Anna Eseker, not just Eseker.

[7:55] That's the problem with these kinds of ghost movies is it's like the ghost needs you to do something to help them,

[8:00] but the only way for them to get the message across is apparently scaring you in, like, very obscure ways.

[8:06] It's like by making clocks spin backwards or something, and you're like, oh, I should have known.

[8:12] They're using the Socratic ghost method.

[8:15] They know that if the person comes to the answer on their own, it will mean more to them.

[8:20] It's more learning.

[8:22] It's experiential.

[8:24] They're like, listen, I'm a ghost.

[8:26] I'm looking for Anna Eseker so I can take her body back over.

[8:29] Do me a solid.

[8:30] I won't hurt your family.

[8:31] Well, I think the journey is just as important as the solution for the demon ghost thing.

[8:36] Yeah, and it's important that someone's jaw gets ripped off.

[8:38] Yeah, that shit was awesome.

[8:40] Okay, but he finds out who Anna Eseker is.

[8:42] So he goes and tracks her down.

[8:44] Turns out she used to be a hillbilly.

[8:46] A Pennsylvania hillbilly, yes.

[8:48] And then she was like a mental institute person.

[8:52] She was possessed by some sort of evil force as a kid, was put into the mental institution, and her death was faked.

[8:59] Oh, I didn't remember that part.

[9:03] Really, she left the institution, lived with her family a little longer because she was cured, and then she disappeared and became a nun.

[9:10] Yeah, because there's problems with mirrors.

[9:12] And let me point out that in rapid succession, the film ran through three horror movie cliche explanations.

[9:20] One, woman in sanitarium – or wait, actually one, hillbillies.

[9:24] Two, woman in sanitarium.

[9:26] Three, Catholics.

[9:28] Yep.

[9:29] It was like one after another.

[9:31] Body blow, body blow, shot to the jaw.

[9:33] It was like breaking a bunch of mirrors.

[9:35] Yeah.

[9:36] And so it turns out that she explains that she had a demon inside of her.

[9:42] Absolutely.

[9:43] She went to the sanitarium, and the doctor had a revolutionary new method for curing people with schizophrenia.

[9:48] Involving?

[9:49] Sit them in a room full of mirrors, strap them in a chair, and just force them to look at themselves for a while.

[9:54] Yeah, well, Elliot, schizophrenics just really need to think about what they've done.

[9:58] Apparently.

[9:59] Yeah, it's in the heart.

[10:00] light of mirrors

[10:02] only then can you realize that you're crazy and he has a

[10:05] the only way i think all that's what i'm i'm crazy look at me and i don't even

[10:09] and i look at myself on the outside i seem crazy

[10:12] the only way i can buy it is it was the fifties and nobody knew anything about

[10:15] psychiatry that they thought was all for knowledge and shit

[10:18] well that's what seventy years earlier and i can buy that more than what i am

[10:22] by what happened next which is apparently a hundred years ago for some

[10:25] reason the mirrors just sucked the demon out of her and trapped them in mirror

[10:28] world yes so the demon was sucked out of her i don't know what is that a movie

[10:32] mirror world

[10:33] uh... your mask you're thinking there is a there is a book called mirror world

[10:37] no that's dreamscape

[10:39] no it's a big overheaded guy you're thinking of the russian satellite mirror

[10:44] no that's actually not what i'm thinking of i'm thinking of river world by the late philip jose farmer

[10:48] no flatland

[10:50] flatliners

[10:52] wait a minute with keith sutherland oh my god

[10:56] and kevin bacon anyway so the demon got sucked out of her now it's living in

[10:59] mirrors and it wants her back

[11:01] it's been trying to

[11:03] explain this to security guards by killing them and it hasn't been getting

[11:06] through yeah luckily keefer is a cut above the rest i need to uh... like i

[11:10] kind of want to sit that demon down and start thinking about its victory

[11:13] conditions like demon what you know

[11:15] what are you trying to achieve are you trying to actually solve something so you should probably stop

[11:19] i mean granted

[11:21] wait it's in love? that's my guess it's in love with anna essiker

[11:23] now the problem is i guess is that it it gets frustrated really easily so it

[11:28] just makes people kill themselves in mirrors or something well it's it's not

[11:32] very it's not a good

[11:33] it's not good at thinking things through this demon it has fits of rage

[11:36] yeah and i mean it's uh... in many ways it's like our protagonist it's like

[11:40] almost like a mirror of him

[11:42] not really anyway

[11:43] so

[11:45] yeah because of the rage anyway meanwhile at home it doesn't look like him it looks like a demon

[11:49] yeah keefer sutherland's son has

[11:52] chipped away the paint over the mirrors

[11:54] because

[11:55] he is friendly with this mirror demon and is luring him to try to get to the

[11:59] family

[12:00] it starts attacking the family

[12:02] keefer sutherland finds the nun hey wait was that the scene where the ex-wife gets

[12:06] all wet

[12:07] yeah eventually throughout the movie the ex-wife shows more and more cleavage as

[12:11] the film goes on

[12:13] uh... and eventually she's just wearing a really wet shirt it's almost like

[12:17] the story i heard about uh... wally wood and power girl

[12:21] where he just kept increasing the size of her bust to see whether anyone would

[12:24] ever notice

[12:25] and they never did and that's why power girl uh... has such a huge ridiculous

[12:29] wreck is a superhero whose main characteristic is a huge wreck yeah

[12:33] it seemed like

[12:34] uh... alejandra aha

[12:36] the director of this uh... was was pulling the same yeah and in between every shot

[12:40] he's like he's reaching over and pulling that neckline down a little bit

[12:44] i think what it is is it's building up you know the payoff at the end you're

[12:47] like

[12:48] it's really important by the end you're like man it's really important that he wins

[12:51] cuz

[12:52] that's some great cleavage yeah that's a nice set that's what he's fighting for

[12:56] yeah i mean that's uh... that's why we fight

[12:58] yeah exactly for those rounders

[13:00] uh... that's what that movie's about right the movie rounders yeah

[13:05] uh... i might have to rent it now

[13:08] uh...

[13:09] so she's trying to save her kids from this evil mirror thing that's chasing

[13:12] after her

[13:14] and he takes the nun at gunpoint because she refuses to come with him takes her

[13:17] back to the department store

[13:19] and then and his wife makes a really weird calls like

[13:23] there's a lot of times where she she's uh... think she sees her son and you're

[13:26] like

[13:27] yeah lady that's clearly a mirror kid like your son's nowhere around here what

[13:31] are you doing

[13:32] oh now it cut your face what do you fucking deserve that she calls him and

[13:35] she's like i'm so scared he's like what's going on there

[13:38] i'm so scared just tell me what's going on i'm so scared

[13:41] okay listen

[13:42] you're not getting through to me you gotta tell me in more descriptive terms

[13:45] then he says i'll be right there

[13:47] but then he takes the nun to the department store yeah that's kind of weird

[13:50] that's a weird call on his part he should have dropped the nun off yes but anyway he

[13:54] takes her to the department store straps her in the mirror chair

[13:57] the mirrors explode you know the demon comes back into her the mirrors explode

[14:01] outwards which was awesome seemingly shredding the hell out of her yeah she

[14:04] like she vaporizes in a cloud of blood

[14:07] but then if you want to see a movie where a nun vaporizes in a cloud of blood

[14:11] i think the demon was really waiting for that like

[14:15] he had serious nun blue balls i guess and now this is where the movie

[14:19] usually would end keeper sutherland escapes maybe the department store falls

[14:23] apart and he reaches his family

[14:25] but the movie instead was like

[14:27] i kind of want there to be a hyperactive fight scene between keeper sutherland and

[14:31] the demon

[14:32] uh... so in the midst of a collapsing tunnel collapsing tunnel and fire

[14:36] everywhere explosions the nun lady comes back as maybe one of the army of

[14:41] darkness evil dead two ghouls or like a resonant evil ghoul yeah combination

[14:45] there's a little more cgi than army of darkness yeah which does make it scarier

[14:49] there's a lot of bad cgi in this and they fight

[14:52] forever and she throws keeper sutherland through a brick wall and he's fine

[14:57] and it ends literally with him

[14:59] impaling her on a steam pipe just like at the end of commando

[15:02] yeah like the scenes where she's throwing him through a brick wall have the

[15:06] like level of realism as an episode of smallville

[15:10] but it kind of turns into an evil dead movie by that point

[15:14] all it needed was keeper sutherland to be like come on baby let's do this thing you know

[15:17] or like

[15:18] impaling him in that hurt and insane groove you got real ugly

[15:22] none or i don't know

[15:24] there's all kinds of explosions and then what happens to keeper

[15:27] well he gets smashed by a rock or something i think

[15:29] and then

[15:31] then he like wakes up right the twist ending no he wakes up and he's walking around

[15:36] he's walking around and

[15:38] uh...

[15:39] stewart did you notice anything strange about the words

[15:43] well i mean woke up

[15:45] uh... it looked like everything was backwards but i thought i'd just been

[15:48] drinking a lot no everything was backwards because now he's trapped in

[15:51] the mirrors

[15:53] wait what? for some reason

[15:56] come on

[15:57] no and then cut to credits

[16:02] that's it that's the end of the movie the hell you say but it's like it feels like

[16:08] it feels like a movie that the script ended

[16:12] come on

[16:15] what are you talking about that's how it ends

[16:18] you watched it with us you watched it with us that's how it ended

[16:25] what are you talking about that was the end of the movie

[17:18] and then they threw a demon fight scene in

[17:21] yeah I think there's like a scene where you know the nun gets shredded a couple

[17:25] mirrors explode

[17:26] cut to Keith Sutherland going

[17:28] yes and then like it

[17:31] then that's the movie

[17:33] and they did test audiences and it's like you know audiences didn't get enough closure here

[17:38] one thing I really love about when he puts her in the chair by the way is

[17:43] he's brought this nun at gunpoint

[17:47] from you know the nunnery

[17:49] from Pennsylvania to New York

[17:50] yeah and made her

[17:53] made her sit in this chair because the demons want her back in order to save his family

[17:58] and then he says thank you

[18:00] as if this was a sacrifice she decided to make

[18:03] which would have made sense if

[18:05] you know like I mean she is a nun but

[18:07] that never happened

[18:09] he'd forced her

[18:11] she's also a really selfish nun he asked her for help save his family

[18:13] and she goes no

[18:15] and then he shows her a picture of his family

[18:17] he's like these are the only thing that matter in the world to me

[18:19] and she goes no I'm sorry

[18:21] and then he puts a gun at her and says

[18:23] now you'll come with me

[18:25] was she afraid that the demons would be able to get out if she returned

[18:27] what kind of shit

[18:29] what kind of shit did she do

[18:31] when she was like a little girl and possessed

[18:33] she was just like kinda bit people

[18:35] she was fuckin weird right

[18:37] it's not like she was like a super powerful person or something

[18:39] well she was but she had more strength than an average little girl

[18:41] but she was just kind of a handful

[18:43] she was like problem child

[18:45] like Clifford

[18:47] yes like Clifford with Martin Short

[18:49] wait like the good son

[18:51] yeah like the good son

[18:55] this is a very quick side note

[18:57] but I remember when Martin Short was on David Letterman's show

[18:59] to promote Clifford

[19:01] and Letterman keeps saying

[19:03] well I saw the movie last night it's really funny

[19:07] and I don't know how old I was maybe like 13 or 14

[19:09] but realizing like wait a minute

[19:11] he didn't see that movie

[19:13] that movie looks terrible

[19:15] he can't be saying it's funny really

[19:39] looking at things with his flashlight

[19:41] and you're probably thinking like oh walking through the department store

[19:43] there's probably a montage of him trying on different outfits

[19:45] set to a song

[19:47] no there wasn't

[19:49] there could have at least been one opening montage of that

[19:51] there could have at least been one opening montage of that

[19:53] so it kind of puts you at ease

[19:55] you've heard dancing with the charred mannequins

[19:57] you've heard dancing with the charred mannequins

[20:05] keeper puts way too much effort into security guard job yeah

[20:20] and i don't know does it really matter that he like goes through those makes

[20:24] his rounds all the time and then once he discovers the place is haunted

[20:27] he seems really committed

[20:29] to tracking it down yeah i don't like a member of the scooby

[20:32] you guys easily so i he's like the security guard that scrooge mcduck

[20:35] should hire to guard his fucking money back to keep the breedable is out of

[20:38] time

[20:39] because he's fucking serious man it's his confidence things he does i smell

[20:43] they have to get to the bottom of this let's go down to the cool flooded

[21:58] that the scene of any smart naked was followed me after by any smarts job in

[22:03] ripped off her head yeah i mean those two things separately would have been

[22:06] great for you

[22:07] yeah gather there's some position there's something about uh... death

[22:11] scene in a car movie is made much worse for me if it's done to a naked lady

[22:16] like to a lady with clothes on it's different but

[22:18] do you feel it's like a waste or something

[22:21] i don't know exactly what it is almost like it makes it possible to enjoy

[22:23] nudity if something gory is happening during the scene

[22:27] it's going to be harder to rewind it

[22:29] to to watch the movie and pleasure yourself or something is that what you're talking about

[22:32] well i mean you guys were in the room so i was going to do that

[22:42] i think there's maybe some implicit misogyny in watching a naked lady die

[22:46] so i think the problem i had with the movie is that it reminded me

[22:50] too much of uh... of various other asian horror movies

[22:54] and that it wasn't very good and uh... it was that it was that type of idea

[22:58] like

[25:58] until they got their jaw ripped off by themselves

[26:03] it was one of these horror movies where no one believes the main character and

[26:07] the main character does

[26:08] increasingly crazy things like a boy who cried mirrors like an episode of twenty four

[26:11] hours

[26:14] he runs to the house and he takes out all the mirrors and he's like

[26:18] he takes his wife and he's like

[26:19] watch this and shoots the mirrors and the mirrors don't heal themselves and he

[26:23] looks like a crazy person who's out on the lawn shooting mirrors

[26:27] uh... in like a suburban neighborhood that's crazy

[26:30] but then

[26:31] almost immediately after that happens

[26:33] the mirrors are always so judgmental i would shoot them

[26:37] why do you make me look fat?

[26:40] why do you make me look like keith or sullivan?

[26:44] it's impossible to not say keither when you say his name

[26:47] keifer is such a weird name

[26:49] but almost immediately after that the mother character

[26:53] sees her son in the mirror like her son's

[26:56] sitting in front of the mirror and sees the reflection but then the sun gets up

[26:59] and the reflection is still there

[27:01] and

[27:02] you're kind of like

[27:03] mirrors why have you stopped being coy all of a sudden? why aren't you playing this

[27:07] cat and mouse game? the mirrors knew that it was time for the act to reveal

[27:10] yeah so act three could kick in

[27:12] i mean it's not

[27:13] it's a this is a very

[27:15] mechanical movie in a lot of ways things happen exactly when they're supposed to

[27:18] happen the story chugs along the story takes its time at times but it chugs along

[27:22] otherwise in terms of structure

[27:24] and the only real surprise is at the end when there's that huge fight with the demon

[27:28] and the reason it's a surprise is that tonally it does not fit anything that you've seen

[27:31] it's like you're watching

[27:33] kind of for the most part there are scares in it but this very subdued like

[27:37] somber movie

[27:38] and then they throw in a big action scene at the end yeah where he gets thrown through an awesome

[27:42] styrofoam brick wall thrown through a brick wall and he's just firing his gun wildly at this

[27:46] monster

[27:47] pow pow pow

[27:49] it's like an episode of uh... the resident evil video game show yeah and i

[27:52] mean don't get me wrong that was the best scene in the entire movie yeah it was awesome

[27:56] now my favorite is when she rips her own jaw off

[27:58] yeah that was gross yeah that was super gross

[28:02] that was pretty cool

[28:03] if i had been in a movie theater while watching it i probably would have laughed

[33:06] and then they cut to something else and then they show you that shot again as if

[33:08] the movie is like

[33:14] in spite of the fact that her body was totally vaporized

[33:16] i bet the original script had a moment where as the mirrors are exploding

[33:19] there's like a slow motion shot of mirror flying toward the nun and you

[33:24] seeing the nun's face reflected in the mirror yeah and she turns the camera and she goes

[46:21] cinematography yeah it's a beautifully shot movie it's a movie that's kind of

[46:26] grayness and sadness like he's very a lot like damp streets and stuff but they

[46:30] look really good it's not a happy movie

[46:35] it's not mirrors which is a laugh riot

[46:39] or dr zhivago which is three hours of wasted time
